There are three F1.6 Fujinons in front of me all different in terms of front/rear glass diameter, distance between elements...

1. 1.6/50mm x-Fujinon (also sold as PORST)
2. 1.6/55mm x-Fujinon
3. 1.6/50mm M42 (rare)

Anyone compared them yet? Or knows the formulas?

I have the m42 version: http://forum.mflenses.com/fujinon-1-6-55mm-m42-t34803,highlight,%2Bfujinon+%2B1+%2B6.html

I actually just ran outside and shot these two for you on my new a850. Both are @1.6. I'm expecting the "M" screen soon which should help for focusing with faster lenses. The lens exhibits a slight glow but it's not unpleasant and might be great for classic portraits. Sharpness is acceptable for a 1.6 lens, i think.

There are 1.6/50mm EBC and non EBC .In the 1.6/55mm there are also EBC and non EBC versions.

There is no m42 EBC.

I have the M42 55mm f/1.6 (there's no 50mm or EBC version in M42). It's clearly a budget lens, plastic aperture ring, etc (compared to metal for e.g. 55mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4). Image quality is not bad, though, but I personally see it as an “effect lens” with non-smooth (but “interesting”) bokeh and slight “glow” wide open.

(Edit: Oh, actually I think I also have the 50mm f/1.6 non-EBC in X-mount, but I haven't tested it yet because it cannot be easily adapted to digital and I haven't gotten around to shooting film for a while.)

Mine M42 is 55mm too, sorry about first post.

It's interesting that it has similar front element as x-Fujinon 55mm but size as whole is smaller (similar as 50mm). Well x-Fujinon 1.6/55mm is really long lens compared to other two.

Is any EBC version of different optical design or only coating has changed?

AFAIK only coating, based on other Fujinon lenses.

All three bellow. It's hard to show info with photos so some remarks:
1. Both 55mm have similar front element in terms of curvature and diameter; x-50mm is flatter.
2. M42 55mm and X-Fujinon 50mm have similar rear element (diameter, curvature); x-55mm is wider.
3. You can see the tallest by far is x-55mm from the photos.
4. Different order of lenses on photos. First photo: M42, x-50mm, x-55mm, second photo: x-55mm, M42, x-50mm.

Optical formulas would be appreciated. And Sony Nex adapter so side-by-side comparison is possible Smile.

The smaller ones are almost "pancake" size!

The additional speed from 2.8 to 1.6 is also a big bonus! Very suitable for m4/3 or Nex.

Anybody that wants to try a 50mm Fujinon bayonet lens that can be bought very cheap? I can recommend the x-Fujinon 50mm F1.9 FM, my two copies have become one of my favourite nifty fifty's.

Mine is x-Fujinon 55/1.6 with magic EBC letters on it. I'm inclined to believe that all Fujica bayonet lenses are multicoated, they have simply stopped writing EBC, like Canon stopped writing S.S.C...

Inside the M42 line, the EBC MC was inferior to the SMC. I had some fujis with EBC and Takumars with SMC. Takumars with higher contrast than fujinons

Don't know about the X mount lenses.

Rino.

I have X-Fujinon EBC 55/1.6 modded to nikon F (converted by me).
Some wide open full-res samples from S3 Pro:

I have it already for some time, but I had no more time yet to test it.

More F1.6 wide open:

Very interesting. Could you share with us some details of the adaptation to Nikon? I would love to adapt my copy to fit my Sony a850.

unfortunately, does not focus into the distance, but I converted it to portraits. I used a simple adapter M42, making holes and screwed him (Slightly scratched adapter because I had to align the screws). Maybe it does not look perfect, but it works ok Smile

On APSC is set up to focus on such a max. distance: (on FF will obviously wider)

I became intrigued by the size of the lens/optics - the difference between 1.6 and 1.7 is similar to 1.7 and F2:

Left-> Fuji 55/1.6, right Chinon 50/1.7

Wide Open F1.6, apsc fuji s3 pro, portrait:

Wide Open Nikon D700:

DOF comparison 1.8 vs 1.6 (hexanon 52/1.8 vs fujinon 55/1.6)
It would seem a small difference, but still visible. Blur is greater, less sharp. And a little more light.
