Forest Lights

Trying to come up with compositions in the rain forest areas is
very troubling and difficult for me.

There is so much detail, that it becomes bewildering to try to
"frame" images in my mind.

In this image, I just "let it go" and didn't worry about too much
detail. Embarassed I only tried to balance the image within all the
details so that it looks decent. I should have stopped down in
order to keep focus near and far - I didn't think it through.
The forest floor is covered with Oxalis, everywhere! Shocked

Sigma SD-14
Tokina S/D 28-70
ISO 200

This Oxalis looked like a miniature forest, looking up into the underside
of the group. Usually, the stems are not visible. I went through a lot of "body bending"
to get my eye onto the viewfinder. Surprised

Sigma SD-14
SMC Pentax 55/1.8
ISO 50

Sometimes it helps to gain a perspective of a contrasting background to
try to isolate details.
Sigma SD-14
Tokina S/D 70-210
ISO 200

The sun momentarily burned through the overcast, and the light
became alive! The Pentax 645 and Provia captured the light I
wanted. The water in the background was glowing gold. Metered
off the "gold" at the bottom of the V in the trees, and opened up
one stop to make sure that the branches would show some
shadow detail.

Wonderful colours Laurence. I particularly like the Oxalis. We've got a patch in our garden although I guess it's a different species. Is your's the Redwood Sorrel (Oxalis oregana) ?

Is the plant in #3 Oplopanax ?

Ron, thank you. I feel that this particular forest is magical as well. It's just tough to get good shots for me in this environment. The full-size image of the forest (#1) really looks better than this smaller web size.

Yes! The oxalis is Oxalis oregona!

And yes, the Devils Club is Oplopanax horridus, a very fitting name because of the spines.

I love Devils Club, because it is always in association with Western Redcedar, Western Hemlock, and Sitka Spruce.
Also, when coming down a mountainside, I know that I'm getting
towards the bottom of the valley when the Devils Club start to appear. Cool

Larry, I simply love every one of these shots.

I used to spend a lot of time hiking through Muir Woods, the giant
redwood forest of northern California, and these shots remind me
of that beautiful place.

Certainly looks like "The Forest Primeval."

Every time I see your Sigma SD14 work I immediately think I'm looking at a medium format velvia slide shot, until I read otherwise. Just love how it renders colors.

The woods down here in northern Alabama aren't as lush, verdant, as
the Olympic peninsula, but I'll be out shooting, anyway!

And of course I love the Provia shot, marvelous! Cool

Yes Laurence - you nailed it again. It may be my adopted region but I really love this PNW flora and fauna

This is a bit different from my "nature" type images.

This took a lot of waiting around, and coming back, for a few
hours duration. Finally the light was right. The repetitive nature,
and the sharp angles appealed to me in a simplistic way.

Sometimes "simple" works out to at least a shot that can
be posted.

This has been "hanging around" for a while, never found
time to scan it. It is not as sharp after the scan as it is on the
transparency, of course. Confused

I don't know how many of you have the Pentax 645, but I want
to say that the ergonomics - the way it fits in the hand - are superb.
It's really a very good camera with a good design, in my opinion.

I rotated the image, and it seems to create more "pop" to me, although it looks rather odd compared to the normal image. Smile

Fantastic. Especially love the first shot..... I wish there were great forests near where I live.... and/or I had the time to get to one for a full day shooting frenzy Smile
