Actually, I had to wait a while to get some sunlight into the leaves. When
the sun finally broke through the trees I was able to fire off a shot that
hopefully would run the gamut from very dark to bright. I was amazed
that the background came out so smooth...the background was full of
hard edges, and the Sonnar tamed them very nicely.
I am awaiting an adapter to use on my Pentax 645, and hope to get
some good shots with the combination.
Anyway, for better or worse, here's the first one from the
Sonnar (newest style of the lens) wide open at f:2.8 with the
Pentax 35mm camera. No post processing involved. The image
was scanned with all scanner settings neutral.

Nice shot Laurence -- wish I could see more.
I may have missed earlier discussions of this lens. Can you fill us in on exactly which flavor of Zeiss Sonar 180/2.8 this is?

Regarding the question of which Sonnar this is, I've attached an image
to show it is the "modern" version of the lens (SN 16238).
The little Pentax ZX-5N is dwarfed by the mass of the lens. However, with
the mounting ring around the lens, it actually is quite well balanced.
I needed to use a 3/8 down to 1/4 adapter for the mounting screw.
I'm actually using the lens as a walk-around lens for a couple of
weeks, so that I can start to visualize the coverage of the lens
with my eyes.
