Just got the first shots back from my new toy.

Nikon EL2 Nikkor 20mm 2.8 AIS

Kodak Gold 200 :

On the plus side the camera's metering and shutter works fine.

On the negative side the quality of the results (and I don't just mean the compositions Wink ) aren't great - I'm not sure how much is due to the film and how much the negative scanning.

I got blank looks when I asked for Ektar 25 - are there any slow colour print films available still?

Are these results typical of high street scanning? Any company recommendations?

Thanks

Very nice old building, I love these buildings, when I was in London I was always looking for this style of building to take photographs.

Kodak Gold is not my favourite film but other people likes it.
Your scans are too small for me to be able to tell something about the quality. What I can imagine, does not seem too bad however.

Oh I was in love too with the Ektar 25. I can't understand why Kodak has discontinued it. I don't know of negtive film because I rarely shoot it, there was the Agfa Ultra 50 that was also very good but it's also discontinued.
I really don't know today what could be a good slow film, I shoot mainly slides or B&W

Like I said, too small to tell. If you can provide a larger image I can be able to tell you my opinion.

Thanks Orio

The larger of the two links to the full size scan (bottom picture) _ lower resolution than I was expecting.

Extar 25 was always my print film of choice. There seems little choice in slow colour film slide or print now kodachrome 25 has bit the dust...

I've never (sorry if this controversial Very Happy) been a Velvia fan - greens are way to fluorescent for me.

Hi Richard
The artifacts are due to the anti-noise and sharpening of the minilab.
If you print the image it will look very nice so it's not a big deal.
Other minilab scan without to much processing, the scans of Cosmin look more natural.

I have seen the bigger enlargement, and I have to say that it does not look bad at all to me.
Of course, if your eye is trained on digital only for some years, the impact with film is a bit schocky.
Anyway I would rate this scan more than acceptable, especially for being a laboratory work (which means automated and all that).
Doing this with a home scanner and specific care will improve the result, but for a small print, I don't find anything wrong in this scan.

Thanks both - I probably had unrealistic expectations, and yes my eye has been very tuned into digital. I suspect 7x5's would be okay, I'm not sure how they'll look at A4. I'll have to experiment with different film and different labs. It's certainly a cheaper way of getting true wideangles than buying a D3 Laughing
