My opinion: Germany will win this championship, because she is not playing very well. When Germany plays well, like in 2006, she does not win. When Germany plays so-and-so, like in 1974, she wins.
This happens because when you are not playing well, you are more concentrated on obtaining the score, and less distracted by the futile things.
This is true for all teams.
In this edition, we have seen this with Holland, Portugal... they played very well in first turn, but at the first tough match, they were too concerned about being stylish and forgot about the fighting energy. And mostly, they did not play as a team.
In football you don't win playing well, unless you are 3 times superior than adversaire (like Brazil 2002). In football you win when you are a compact team and when you are prepared to fight until the end. _________________ _

You have already the best for that, you have Capello. He is a master of this philosophy, the Julius Caesar of trainers.
The question is, will your players follow him? It's not easy to follow a coach of a different nation, especially one like Capello that does not bend on anything. For instance, he will fire away the wags the first day of the camp, you can bet on that. Will your players accept his discipline?
You have the quality players, like Gerrard, Lampard. I am convinced that if your team will follow him compact, you will win the next World Cup. _________________ _

I'm pleased to hear that about Capello. I don't know too much about his philosophy but I've always believed it's team spirit and determination that wins games, not fine players who fall about all over the pitch like Ronaldo. Alf Ramsey, our manager in 1966, was a disciplinarian too.
Gerrard and Lampard, hmm, I'm not sure they can play together. I'd choose Gerrard every time, and make him captain too. _________________

You have the best man for that. He's the discipline. He threw off team players like Beckham and Ronaldo and did not raise a brow. He does not care what player you are, if you don't work with him, you are out, even if you are Ronaldinho.
The only doubt I have, about him coaching England, is for the language and mentality - Capello is not an English speaker and not a good Italian speaker either he just don't like to speak but communication is necessary to build a team and to have the players respect your orders. Will he manage that part? And will your famous players follow him everywhere, even when he make them sit on the bench?
This is what time will have to tell.
| Quote: | | Gerrard and Lampard, hmm, I'm not sure they can play together. I'd choose Gerrard every time, and make him captain too. |
Me too. Gerrard is #1 midfielder in the world in my opinion.
I just wanted to say that you have the quality players to win a title. You need to make them a team. This Capello can do, but he needs players that put the ego aside and follow him. _________________ _

Absolutely agree. I don't care who he kicks out, you've convinced me to trust him to choose the right players. I believe the right players will respond to discipline - God knows we need some.
I heard Capello speaking in English on the radio the other day, he's coming on leaps and bounds. I was really pleased to hear him. _________________

Here are some random photos taken on last friday when I was at Vienna west railway station. Sorry for the poor quality. IIRC, I was using the CZJ f4/20.

@Carsten - I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge your two messages last night, they didn't show up until this morning for some strange reason. Thanks for the goodwill to England, I congratulate Germany on getting to the final and wish them good luck. I never write them off till they're out.
@Sandie - thanks for the pics. It's nice to see what else is going on "behind the scenes". So far I think these Chamionships have been brilliant - good football, good referees and wonderful organisation, perhaps the best ever. Congrats to Switzerland and Austria. (Didn't think much of the power cut last night though! ) _________________

Italian federation today has fired coach Donadoni and resumed Lippi (the world champion trainer).
I'm sorry for Donadoni who is a gentleman but he did not have the experience and the balls to hold a national team.
This is good news for Italy for trying to defend the title in 2010, Lippi is made of the same stuff as Capello
The problem of our aging players though remains. _________________ _

Spain is champion!
Jes, congratulations! It's true, the best team has won the cup!
(One of the few times that this has happened.)
Of course, I am sorry for us Germans. But then, finihsing on second place in a European championship is fantastic!
And Spain was the only team that was able to play on a high level in all matches. They really have deserved it.
If you look at the last decades, Spain has constantly been one of the best teams in the world, but they have not won a national site championship since 1964. It really was about time for them to win again!
So, let's celebrate (I mean that!) and then look forward to the World Championship 2010.
(Yes, I know, there are the Olympic Games this year, but the fact that they take place in China causes some kind of bad taste, doesn't it?) _________________ "Schnäppchenjäger" | "KAPCTEH" | "Karusutenu" | "Carsten" | T-shirt?

Jes, congratulations! It's true, the best team has won the cup!
(One of the few times that this has happened.)
Of course, I am sorry for us Germans. But then, finihsing on second place in a European championship is fantastic!
And Spain was the only team that was able to play on a high level in all matches. They really have deserved it.
If you look at the last decades, Spain has constantly been one of the best teams in the world, but they have not won a national site championship since 1964. It really was about time for them to win again!
So, let's celebrate (I mean that!) and then look forward to the World Championship 2010.

Thanks Carsten!.
I do not follow soccer (I do not really know about the details of the play), but everybody here was so excited with the match.
At the time the Spanish team made the goal, fireworks were being fired around...
It's very curious to see the streets empty because almost everybody is following such an evenement .
Kind regards to all soccer followers, congratulations to the German team for getting to the final.

Congratulations to Spain. I enjoyed tonight's match, even though there was only one goal. For me it was an unusual experience because I really didn't mind who won - I have a soft spot for our old rivals Germany, home of some good friends, and Spain really deserved a win after so many years in the wilderness.
