Here is the image I made for an article I have been researching about East German DDR and Soviet lens ring markings. Also attached are examples on lenses of these marks, including the Zeiss T* still used today on all their lenses.

I have based this on extensive research with East German camera museums, and the Zeiss company. Special thanks to Michael Sorms and Marco Kröger from the Dresden Camera Museum “Geschichte der Dresdner Fotoindustrie”. You can see their amazing site here, use Google Translate http://www.dresdner-kameras.de

EAST GERMAN LENS RING MARKINGS

№ The Numero symbol which preceded a lens’ serial number

T Zeiss mark for “Transparentz” coated, used by Carl Zeiss (Oberchon) and Carl Zeiss (Jena)

V Meyer Optik Göerlitz mark which stands for 'Vergütet' coated

C Jos. Schneider Optische Werke in Kreuznach aka Schneider-Kreuznach mark for their coated lenses

SOVIET LENS RING MARKINGS

Π The Soviet "Red P" is not the Greek pi symbol, but rather the Cyrillic letter "P", which stood for "Просветление" = Enlightenment. The major Soviet designation for any coating type.

Ð Very rare

X "химическое" for chemically formed coating, like after acids treatment. Very sturdy but more reflective. Used in the outer lens surfaces.

Ф "физическое" for the coating type forming due to physical reasons (high pressure/vacuum and 300C temp, and magnesium fluride evapourates into the chamber and sticks to the glass after some time)

эф ю Yellow occurring on a Jupiter 18
