Without a dought the best macro lens I've ever come across is the Nikon Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4 IF AIS.
I also have the Micro Nikkor 55mm f2.8 AIS but the 200mm is in a totally different league.
Some samples, most of them hand-held!:

And a 100% crop:

Congrats! Shocked Superb shoots! In my experience shorter focal length macro lenses are produced better result than longer ones.

I completely agree, but unfortunately they're not mine, and they're too big for the Manual Lenses forum where they were originally posted by DSG. I moved them here so I could read the text in the original thread.

Excellent shots but I have a problem to understand that these shots at (sometimes)>1:1 were shot using a 200mm lens?? Extention needed would have been massive ...

That is some serious macroing. You obviously know how to get the most out of the most excellent lenses...

No extension rings were used. The Micro Nikkor 200mm f4 IF AIS only goes to 1:2 macros on its own but add a 52mm Canon 500D close up lens and it goes to 1:1 and add a second 500D and it does 2:1 macros.
The 500D's are so good I can stop the Nikkor down to f32 with no major diffraction problems!
