Ok Very Happy
I'm in the office...
I'll try to take some shots over the weekend, and post them.

Thanks.

I really do like the bokeh though.
And, it seems it shows more character at closeup shots.

Volna is an excellent lens from every aspects, I am sure you will love it.

It seems it's well known on this forum than other forums on the net.
Any reason?

I am from Eastern Europe, Hungary. We had lenses and cameras from Eastern block including Russia. Many other forum members like Orio,Carsten, Borges ... discovered Russian lenses and they love them.

I'm really impressed with this Volna-9.
It has such acreamy bokeh...

is there a longer focal length Russian lens that I ought to look up?
I'm interested in 85mm to 135mm, mainly for portrait shots.
Sharpness with creamy bokeh would be nice.

I discovered Russian lenses in 1965. I think they were available then all over Europe, not just in the Soviet bloc. There was a sole importer of USSR cameras and lenses in London - Technical & Optical Equipment http://cameras.alfredklomp.com/toe/. I think they're still going strong.

USA had an import ban on Russian & DDR goods for a long time and I think that's why Japanese photo equipment is much more widely used over there. What we called M42 mount in the 60's was called Pentax mount in USA. There were ways round the ban - I think some Zenit cameras were rebranded.

BTW, don't forget the Jupiter 37A 3.5/135 - much better than the 11 in my opinion.

peterqd, When you say "11" you mean the Jupiter11A is better correct... not the Tair-11 ? The reason I ask is I just took delivery of the Tair [chrome] and your post has given me a jolt Shocked I havent had time to shoot it yet!

My personal recommendations of Russian lenses are:

Objectively best performers, rather neutral in character (=well optimized):
- MIR-1B 2.8/37
- Volna-9 2.8/50 Macro
- Helios-44 series
- Kaleinar 2.8/100 (but intense colours!)
- Jupiter-37 3.5/135
- Telear-N 3.5/200
- Tair 3-S 4.5/300

Smallest size:
- Industar-50 series

Most "character":
- Jupiter-9 2.0/85
- Jupiter-11 4/135
- Jupiter-21 M 4/200
- Volna-3 MC 2.8/80 (P6 lens)

Best bokeh:
- Tair-11 2.8/133
- Volna-3 MC 2.8/80

I guess, another lens with "personality" is the Helios-40, but I do not have it.

No, I meant the Jupiter 37A or AM is a much better all-round lens than the Jupiter 11A - in my opinion of course, but it looks like Carsten agrees! :

Yep! The J37 is faster (a little), sharper, shows higher contrast etc.
The J11 has more personality (you could also say "flaws"). Wink

huhging, if I can offer a little advice, it pays to take your time before deciding on which lenses you want to buy. Some people here have experience of very many lenses Shocked, others not so many, but I don't think there's anyone who has EVERY lens. The number of people who can give a direct comparison between one lens with another is limited, and we can't all be on line all the time to answer, so it really does pay to allow a couple of weeks to let everybody comment and advise before you decide.

I was little confused when you named me, yet you've quoted another person.
But, either case, you're right.
I tend to make haste decisions, when it comes to buying something.
Honestly, I somehow feel that is a part of enjoyment in this hobby.
Taking pictures + buying new gears... Laughing

Anyway, here are some more pictures I took today from Volna-9.
it was really pouring just now... Crying or Very sad

What do you all think?
Do I have a decent copy?
I'm impressed so far....
Please excuse the non-artistic aspect of the pictures.
I've just started learning...

how does the Jupiter-37A/M compare to the CZ Jena 135/3.5? I assume the J-37 is a Sonnar clone as well..

Yes, they are more less same, you can't see much difference.

Sharpness and bokeh-wise yes. The J37 has classic Russian colours, denser and richer than the CZJ:
