I decided to try a version of Rense´s DIY macro flash, see

http://renseblog.stellaria.nl/#post42.

Made from a Pringles tube. It´s the right size and has aluminium foil already inside (though not so bright). Ready in three minutes, about.

First sample pics, Micro-nikkor 105/4 lens at 1:2

These were underexposed. Maybe I should try with brighter foil and less diffusing foam.

Yes, brighter foil I guess will help more.

Yes, try "Estrella" next time. They are more healthy too. Smile

I made mine following Rense's blog too and I'm very thankful for it. I still don't have a dedicated macro lens, so for now the Sonnar 135mm with a set of tubes will do...

The problem I found was that depending on what set up you used i.e. 90mm, extension tubes, tele convertors, lens reversing rings etc then the length you neeed to make the tube kept changing so I made mine with a split in it so its in 2 halves. The rear fits inside the front part:

This way I can make it longer or shorter to suit Cool

Images of the build and also image staken with it in situ are all here:

I made another one for my Pancolar, that lens has great macro potential when reversed or with tubes. I'll post some macro pics from today in another topic.

This one was finished in 5 minutes, and it gives decent results, but I should probably make one a bit longer (the closer it is to object, the better the light as far as I understood). Wink

Funny looking Tony, I guess a bigger extra beer can will serve you well.

Indeed, that's a nice advice, a 0.5l beer can might be just right.

For diffuser material, I've had good results using thin, white cloth -- like from an old bed sheet.

Those diffusers are interesting, though. I need to give that a try.
