How would you design your dream digital reflex?

Here's mine:

1- the shortest register distance possible, in order to allow compatibility with all existent 135 format reflex lenses

2- a generic lens mount (a concept similar to that of Tamron adaptall, but applied to camera body), for which a series of different additionals are provided by the factory, to accomodate all the existing lens mounts. Of course, the factory additionals will guarantee the complete compatibility of each lens mount with the camera electronics

3- largest and brightest possible viewfinder, with default screen with microprisms and split prism, and a series of alternative screens available for the various needs (e.g. a screen with guidelines for architects, etc)

4- interchangeable camera sensor. Just like we can swap films on a film camera, we will be able to swap sensors on the digital camera body. So third parties will produce CMOS, CCD, and FOVEON sensors and we will be able to change them at will

5- built-in laser telemeter with visual and sound focus confirmation (of course working for all lenses given what said in point 2)

6- anti-dust sensor shaker system

7- really efficient image stabilization built in camera

8- camera body skeleton of solid metal, and waterproof and dustproof

9- open source easily updateable operating system. Third parties will be able to provide additional features via plugin architecture

10- long life-low cost rechargeable battery system

11- ability to burn and encrypt in ROM copyright and ownership data to make camera stealing less desireable

12- built-in satellite receiver and ability to write world coordinates information straight in the image file while photographing

13- built-in cordless internet connection to allow for instantaneous upload of images to online storing resources.

14- camera clock internet connected and automatically corrected via synchronization with atomic clock resource

16- RAW2 image format able to shoot and record simultaneously up to seven different exposures for a click

17- high speed internal miniature disk drive (necessary for point 16)

18- optional attacheable climatization system to keep camera at constant temperature regardless of external conditions and prevent condensation of moisture

19- vocal recorder, to record comments for each photo taken. The comments will be stored with the same filename of the corresponding image

20- built in basic image corrections such as crop, anti vignette and straightening of perspective

21- very large and bright LCD with polarized orientable protection screen to allow visibility from any angle

22- built in thermocolorimeter to allow for precise color measurement without the need of using external tools

23- sophisticated light metering systems, including a multipoint spot selectable eye-controlled metering

24- a memory system to store metering presets. This way one can calibrate the metering system for each lens once, at all aperture, and will be able to recall presets later and the camera will instantly know not only which lens is mounted, but also how much exposure correction to apply for that lens, for each aperture position.

25- Extended exif to store lens data in exif also from old manual lenses. The user will store once the name of his lenses in a database and will select the appropriate name each time he mounts a manual lens. Until the next change the system will write in the Exif data the identity of the lens and the aperture used (which the system will calculate based on an independent automatic metering control system that will associate the time-aperture couple of the automatic metering control system with the time calculated by the camera exposure meter, and will desume the relative aperture of manual lens automatically, writing it in the exif data.

Ok for the moment I think it's enough, so let's see how you will build your dream digital reflex when you will be billionaire Laughing

You forgot the cup-holder

Wink

I like your idea of an interchangeable mount. No more adapters, just a sort of "interface" that "translates" the automatic functions of the different mounts to the internal camera system. Then you could "plug in" a mount for Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Contax, ...

Of coure a lot of people would become poor from the outburst of mass-LBA that logically follows Laughing

Maybe the cup is too much Very Happy but I will surely add a built-in MP3 player with headphones jack plug, to listen to some good music while you review the images of the day on the very large, very beautiful LCD screen of your camera!!! Smile

What about the bean grinder and coffee maker? Laughing Geez, Orio, you've
got everything I was wanting, plus about a dozen more!

I'd also want alternate solar power capability. And of course, zero
emissions! Laughing If the mount was made of "liquid metal" a la Terminator
movie, it would automatically mold and interface to whatever lens was
fastened to it. Metallurgy and nanotech will have to grow some more
for that one. Laughing

What about GPS? You're in the woods etc shooting and forget the way
back! Surprised

Nothing left to add, Orio!

Much more than I would have thought of... Good list!

Send this to Canon, Nikon and Pentax and tell them whoever will build a cam like this will be the favourite brand of the MFLForum. Wink
(Not that they would care...)

Thanks Carsten!
But I am afraid that Canon and Nikon will put my list in the bin immediately. Their most earnings come from the sale of autofocus lenses. For them to make a camera like mine would mean to lose millions of euros - unfortunately Crying or Very sad
