I had a bunch of slides to copy, I didn't want to buy a dedicated slide copier so I used a D50 and 55mm micro lens. Using custom white balance and exposure control on the camera made for some very good copies even on some faded ektachrome.

Lot of examples I copied here: http://www.pbase.com/arlon/old_slide_copies&page=all

Sample (me in 1957):

Nice work. I'm guessing new contrasty films (e.g. velvia) are going to be difficult with this approach. Nikon did a cheapish accessory to screw onto the 55mm nikkors for copying, but I suspect the 1.5 crop factor would now come into play so your solution is probably a better option.

I saw many great results, thank you for sharing this excellent idea. I really like your DAD portrait in Korea.

This is the way we had to do it back in the 1970/80’s when copying transparencies.
It was common to have a permanent set up for doing it. This eliminated light problems etc and gave consistent results.
All printing (Publishing etc) also used the camera coping method (Process cameras) this was dropped by industry in the 1980’s

It makes you wonder why we have scanners when the old tried and tested method has been about for so many years!
Could you post a 100% crop from your results?

It does make things pretty simple. I'll put up a few 100% shots in the pbase gallery this evening (Houston Texas time).
