I bought a really compact USB 3.0 card reader by Kingston: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007PFQ0PC/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

It is interesting, that its speed even on USB 2 ports is considerably better than the usual stuff:
About 38 MB/sec READ speed.
This is VERY good for a USB 2 port.

Very important, this reader needs no cable to connect it to your computer.
Most USB cables out there are not up to speed with USB 3.

On my laptop which has USB 3.0, the READ speed increases, but not much, to 42 MB/sec.

Highly recommended and cheap accessory.

I tested with this micro SD card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007JTKLEK/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i01

WRITE speed was about 10 MB/sec, on both machines.

The Sony adapters which are coming with decent memory sticks are also pretty fast.
