The last addition - very unusual Helios 44M-4:

As you can see it has:
1. A/M switch, unusual for this model and of unusual shape
2. very wide focus ring
3. focus ring turns into an opposite direction
4. unusual coating (gold - light magenta - light violet)
5. 6 digits number as some export models
6. label in russian (not so uncommon for this model though)

I am not sure but I think the focus ring and coating of this model are similar to Helios-44K-4

Hello MF Team, hello no-X.
Have a big surprise for no-X: recently i was at local bazaar to check if there any M42 lenses, and seller has shown me Helios MC AUTO ZOOM 35-135 1:3.5-4.5. Looks like as KMZ model. Diaphragm is stuck open. To zoom, have to move zoom ring up and down (no need to rotate it). Please check photo. No other photo, as seller guy was little bit nervous (he sells gold also). Le me know what you think about it. He was asking for it around $100.
p.s. this post was one of reasons to register at MF Smile

don't see photo in msg, here is link: hxxp://forum.mflenses.com/userpix/20112/3994_19022011127_2_1.jpg

Never saw such a zoom. This list of KMZ lenses doesn't contain it http://www.zenitcamera.com/catalog/lenseslist.html.
Honestly it looks like any other Japanese zoom, but this KMZ logo...
BTW your picture doesn't show because of anti spam protection for the first post.

Out of curiosity and in part to maybe reinvigorate discussion can anyone speculate as to why the coating was changed so drastically from the earliest п coated Helios 44s to the later chrome ones that do not bear the symbol? One goes from a vibrant blue/violet to a pale gold/light blue. Just following the information here: http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-166.html I would think this deep purple would be quite good for a single coating.

Was it too expensive?
Is the п coating impressive looking but not as effective?

The later m39 version are less prone to flare. Not sure if the color rendering will be differnt as I have sold all my red p helios 44.

I discovered this lens. It has a 00 serial number and is being sold/auctioned. I'm not sure if it is Japanese rip-off or one of those rare pieces, if the myth is true, double zeros, made for Dignitaries.

Export Helos-44 by MMZ "Zebra" with strange number 90XXXXX:

My backup Zebra lens by MMZ has the same serial structure: N9071648

BTW: the backup Zebra became my current Zebra after some burglar nicked my camerabag during the night. The bag contained my digital camera including allmost all M42 lenses including the Zebra lens with serial 000525. I probably will never see it back... Crying or Very sad

On the positive side: I'm back to celluloid now and use one of the (indestructible) Zenit-E bodies with the backup Zebra as a daily camera now. I've also bought a 1968 Zenit-E with Helios 44 and I also bought a 77M-4 but haven't been able to do the comparison between the 44 and the 77M-4 yet.

This post is GOLD.
I am really happy to see so many HELIOS enthusiasts here.
I will post serials and images for all my HELIOS lenses next days.

The zoom is not made by KMZ. A Japanese manufacturer illegally used the symbol.
Zenit Camera even addresses some of these fakes under the heading "Not our 'Zenith'":
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&u=http://www.zenitcamera.com/qa/index.html&ei=HlisTf6WOsLcgQfr7_jzBQ&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBoQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.zenitcamera.com/qa/index.html%26hl%3Den%26prmd%3Divns

The Auto Cosmogon is a Helios 44m. No different. It was just re-labeled for the U.S. market. Relatively uncommon but by no means rare.

I thin the reason was color cast. It wasn't a problem for b/w photography, but it would ruin color photographies, which would get very strong yellow cast.

Bought this 44 just because it's the silver metal kind. I doubt it's anything rare, but wonder if no-X can tell me something about it. I had hoped for the many aperture blade model, but I suspect this isn't because it only stops to f/16. Serial number is 5009859.

Just went through this thread for the umpteenth time (I like helios lenses Smile), and found something that bothers me a bit. The Helios 44m1 with 2 aperture blades, I can't find any information or mention of it at all anywhere outside this thread. Does anyone have any more information about it??
Thanks!

It is mentioned here at the bottom http://www.zenitcamera.com/archive/lenses/helios-44.html There are many lenses in this thread you won't find any official information about them: 44 with min. aperture 22, 44M-4 with A/M switch, 44M MC.

M39 lens for the Zenit 3M so it has the smae register as an M42 lens, you will need an M39-M42 stepper ring.

50 serial means it was made in 1950, I expect it will be excellent.

It was not made in 1950. Zenit SLR prototypes were not even introduced until '51. This helios was made in 1965. The first "5" denoted the year in the decade for mmz-make lenses.

I don't believe any of the MMZ lenses were 13-bladed. By the time production of Helios lenses were shifted to other factories, the 13 bladed versions had already been discontinued. So it probably has 8.

Aah, it is an MMZ one, if it was a KMZ, 50 would denote 1950.

Sure it isn't 1965? My MMZ made Industars with a 49 serial are made in 1954, not 1964.

That's untrue. For example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10403737@N03/3735247002/in/photostream

That's impossible. MMZ was not established until 1957.

I'll take a picture, show the logo on them.

According to experts in Eastern Europe, KMZ made M39 lenses are denoted with the first two numbers being the year of manufacture, I have 54, 55, 56 and 57 lenses, there are also 53s, prior to 54 they are Zeiss glass.

I have a Arsat N 50/1.4 lens, made by Arsenal, Kiev. I believe, that this started as MC Helios-123. The leaflet, which I got with the lens, has a picture of MC Helios-123.

This pic is from the Photohistory.ru web page

I don´t know, if these lenses were ever sold under Helios name. Maybe the production only started after Ukrainian independency.

This is pic of my Arsat N lens

The lens design is 7 elements in 6 groups. 7 blades.

Oh thanks, I didn't notice that part when I read through that page. I guess its better than nothing to know it was an experimental version!
