Based on recent discussions about Topcor UV lenses I wanted to find out the differences between the Topcor RE 135/3.5 and UV 135/4 lenses.
All pictures shot RAW with my Ricoh GXR-M (APS-C) and converted after minor exposure corrections without further manipulation in LR6.

1st example at infinity focus:

RE lens at F4

100% crop of above

UV lens at F4

100% crop of above

100% crop of RE lens at F8

100% crop of UV lens at F8

2nd example at short distance:

RE at F4

UV at F4

RE at F8

UV at F8

3rd example for purple fringing check (medium distance)

100% crop of RE lens at F11

100% crop of UV lens at F11 (unfortunately the bird didn't wait)

My conclusion is that both lenses perform very good whereby the RE lens offers slightly better micro contrast as can be seen in 1st example (crops) and the UV lens is better in terms of purple fringing (3rd example). However, the differences are not really noticeable in normal photography as can be seen in the 2nd example. Topcon distance ring no. 1 was used for the 2nd example (9mm).

This concludes my presentation of all available Topcor UV lenses from 28 to 200mm.

Well done.
A good practical demonstration.

+1 !

So, looks like the UV series are underrated then! I never had nor used RE lenses, i just have a set of UV lenses so i cannot make any comparison.
But i like what i get from the UV Topcor lenses!

well done, it's nice to see the UV lenses starting to get some love, but sadly I do have one nit to pick, it looks like your infinity shots have different planes of focus.

Thank you all.

As I never trust the lens I've checked it with the focus aid of the camera which is normally very trustworthy and precisely. Therefore it's rather unlikely that the focus planes are really different. However, I already realized in my 10 lens comparison done earlier that the RE is slightly in favor in terms of micro contrast; i.e. sharpness in pixel peeping mode.
