Sure (although even at f/8 there are differences). These shots were at f/4, which is close to wide open for many of the tested lenses, so one would expect bigger differences.

this why I did that to get a somewhat fair comparison and also provided f8 to see what happens if stopped down, hopefully hitting the "sweet spot".

I cannot more than agree to what you said about professional lens testing, but that is out of range for most of us in terms of time and equipment. The closeup test was born out of the Ultron test, so as to be able to also compare between focal lengths, since 35mm is the "normal" lens if taking the crop factor into account. Esp. for wide angles, infinity landscape shots would need to be made since this is what they usually are optimized for.
