Like last year, I went to Piacenza for the Christmas market in Piazza Cavalli.
I will surely go there again before Christmas, so this in fact is a "first part".

You really love this lens, Orio, don't you?
One can tell by the way you treat it. And it follows its master perfectly!

This is a fantastic series, my friend!
I adore the stand shots...

When I could, I stopped down to gain some depth of field which is critical in some subjects. It's always a matter of balancing well resources. When you photograph people you prefer to use f/1.4 and obtain a faster time to prevent motion blur. When you shoot objects with a depth, you stop down to gain DOF (except if you're after a blur effect of course).
As for reflections, that's the main power of the Distagons I think. Both this lens and the 2/28 feature an excellent control of flare.
You have that also in the slower versions (2.8/28 and 2.8/35) but there it is expected, while with larger surface glass it's more difficult.
This shows that the T* coating is more than a marketing gimmick, it's a real advantage for a lens.
All the pictures here have been taken without hood. Distagons make you really confident.

Yes it's one of those lenses you can really depend on completely.

I love the stands too Very Happy
They look so warm... nothing to do with the cold shop windows.

Also one thing I like is that for Christmas time people buys funny little things just for the sake of it... not because it's useful or needed. There's not much to lose financially but a lot to gain for warmth and laughter.

Thanks Hooper and Jes. Yes, this year I've been looking for more atmosphere - last year instead I went for more details in close-up. This year I really wanted to make the viewer "feel like if he was there".

Probably next time I go I will focus a little more on the details. And I hope to get more from people expressions. This times I got a few very good ones like 9, 11, 17 (not easy, you have to be quick in "stealing" expressions, and manual focusing is of course a further challenge in that), next time I hope to get more because Christmas will be closer and people more absorbed and less distracted.

Yes. I will be with my family at Marburg Christmas market next Tuesday. Guess, I will have to bring my cam and some lenses... Smile

Do it, I always take great advantage of these situations photographically.
Take a wide lens with you, when light is low wide lenses need less shutter speed and offer deeper DOF which are both vital features.

Your usual stunning offering. That lens is definitely one to lust after and you reallly use it to maximum advantage. I presume it was on the Canon 5?

Yes, Patrick, correct.
35mm is my favourite focal lenght because when the lens is good and fast like this one, you can do everything with a 35mm.
You can close focus, you can do landscape, you can do ambiented portrait, you can take low light pictures, all things that are represented in this series. And if the image quality is good, you can make crops if you need a narrower angle.

If people could only buy just one lens, without no money limit, but only one lens, I would advice: buy the best 35mm lens that you can.

Of course, to do all this the 35mm lens must be mounted on a full frame camera. Else there's no point, and one should use a 18mm or 20mm instead for an APS-C body. But rarely 18mm or 20mm lenses can offer the speed and the uncompromised IQ that the best 35mm lenses can offer.

Here's a selection from some that I did not include in the series, since I wanted it to be restricted to the Distagon shots.

There are taken with tele lenses on the 400D.
Unfortunately I forgot the 400D in JPG mode so I shot all images JPGs, which made it more difficult to obtain from the takes the quality that I am used to obtain from the RAWs, anyway here they are:

What a great series.
I would start saving for this lens but I find my 35mm f2.4 quite hard to focus...
