I haven't used my Sonnar since 2009, the time I started my MF adventure. Back then I had a 40D and soon after I got a 7D. It never worked well on my 7D, never metered right and I had to struggle to get something useful out of it. Well, it seems it was all user error but in my defense, I was a newbie back then. So today I decided to mount in on the Mark II and I was blown away! I know this lens is sharp wide open but come on! Bck in 2009 the aperture worked but now it's stuck wide open, nothing unusual from these old Jena lenses. So, all Sonnar pictures are wide open. Most of the Canon shots were in very bright light.
I don't have AF confirm adapters on these lenses so I have to rely on my eyes and it's hard when Alex rarely sits still long enough to make finer adjustments. I still think I got acceptable focus on most shots. I could use live view but it's even harder when my boy is running around.

Sonnar
The focus is on the red house. It's over a kilometer away.

100% Look at the sharpness, wide open! I'm impressed The picture above is slightly sharpened but the 100% is before I sharpened the picture.

Thank you! I think it's because they are family pictures and I do almost only post pictures of my son these days, people get bored _________________ Canon 5D Mark II + Carl Zeiss T*

Thank you! The more I use the Canon the more I like it. It's really fantastic how sharp it is wide open and that sharpness improves when stopped down. I just wish I could get an AF confirm adapter on it, it's so hard to get focus right relying on my eyes only. _________________ Canon 5D Mark II + Carl Zeiss T*

These are very beautiful images of your son Omar and they will give you very nice memories 10 or 20 years later.
The Canon 1.2/85mm is with FD as well with EF mount one of the best portrait lenses you can buy for the money. Not too sharp for portrait and a wonderful and very smooth bokeh. Wide open or one or two stops down (and only at that values this lens makes sense) it is very difficulty to get the focus due to the very very thin DOF. So I'm happy to have it in EF mount.

Thank you Rolf
Yes, it's a great lens for portraits and low light photography. I find it sharp wide open, even though it's harder to focus. The bokeh is just delicious! _________________ Canon 5D Mark II + Carl Zeiss T*
