Canon FD 300mm F4L aperture is always wide open

Hi. I've had this lens for some time now, bought it used and the aperture adjustment didn't work at all — it's always wide open. All my other FD lenses are closed down half way by default (when no rear cap is attached), and closed down to the smallest aperture when I attach a rear cap. But this 300/4 is always wide open: neither attaching the rear cap nor putting it on a camera/adapter makes the aperture blades move.

So at first I assumed it's oily blades that made the aperture stuck wide open, but then I've noticed that the mount looks a bit different than on my other FD lenses. Here's a photo of this 300/4 (the one on the left) compared to other 4 FD lenses:

It looks like it was rotated somehow, the red dots don't match like they do on all the other lenses. So this is probably somehow related to the aperture staying always wide open? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Any help is greatly appreciated! Happy Dog

Edit: seems like the forum blocks images in new users' posts, so the photo I've added doesn't show. It also blocks urls from new users, so I can't even add a link to the image hosting. That's unfortunate. Smile Here's the direct link "modified" a bit to pass the great firewall (two "y" instead of two "t"): hyyp://someimage.com/FNcnCIf

I got two of them with this same problem. Sometimes wide open sometimes fixed f/5.6
I disassembled partially one of them but I couldn't figure out what was wrong...
I have to try it again.
In the meantime I use the Tamron 300 mm Sad Sad Sad

Thanks Jesito. I took a close look at the rear end of my lens, watched some youtube videos about FD lenses, and it seems like the mount was slightly rotated simply because I played with a rear cap on it before, and took the cap off at an angle.. I rotated it back to the normal position with my fingers and now it's where it's supposed to be, so that was nothing and had nothing to do with the aperture not working. Hence I'm back to square one.

You have two same lenses with the aperture not working - both 300 f4 L? If so, looks like it's a common issue with this lens. Sad The only "manual" for this lens I've seen is this one (you've probably seen it too): http://www.bigeye.url.tw/big5/d_ca300_4.htm
But I've got 0 experience with lens repair, and this 300/4 is definitely not the easiest specimen to start experimenting with.

I'm sorry, I misconfused the model. Mines are not the L model, but the simpler one.
On your pictures in the first post there were no side pictures, and I didn't notice the "L"...
Then maybe it's not so common failure.

In my experience, many faults come for lack of use, simply disassemblying and cleaning, many lenses come back to life.

I think Attila had a good repair man that could fix lenses at reasonable prices..
Good luck!

I have a genuine Canon FD rear cap that I have cut the middle out of with a craft knife, it allows me to see into the back of the lens and the genuine cap acts like the camera mount and allows the aperture to be adjusted off the camera. It's very useful.

Yes, you are right. I do the same with a Samsung to FD adapter, once the lens set into the adapter behaves like you say.
