well....

It's an AF lens but still... Seems be quite good and I get one after 2 days.
Maybe I sell my 70-200 4L even it has USM AF motor and this dosn't... I don't need it so much... I prefer 2.8 for low light shots Smile
And I't quite rare shooting where I need super quick focusing and heard it's pretty fast with this.

Does anyone have experience with the lens?

Here some information.

sorry, I have no experience with this lens, only the newer model 70-200.

If you can I would recommend that you hold on to you 70-200/4 untill you have a chance to test the 80-200.
It looks promising but you never know if it fits your taste until you have tried it.

I've had this lens since 1990 and have never had the slightest issue. It's big, heavy but black unlike most Canon L lenses. Parts are no longer available, but there are alot still out there working w/o a problem so if I was in the market that wouldn't bother me. I like not having the "white" that Canon uses to signify their L lenses; it doesn't attract nearly the attention the newer L's do.

I've read several places that this lens is among the best zoom lenses Canon's ever produced and that the IQ is equal to or better than the current versions. IMHO the only advantage of the current version would be IS.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in the quality if you get it.

I've seen reviews that indicate this lens is a slightly sharper than the 70-200 f2.8L. I've used both and didn't notice much difference in daily shooting. The 80-200 does not have a recessed rear element like the 70-200, so it can't be used with Canon teleconverters. It can be used with third party (Tamron, Sigma, etc.) telconverers that don't have a protruding front element. I don't think the speed of autofocus will be a concern. The real advantage to USM is that it's quiet, and you can switch between manual focus and autofocus without flipping a switch. As was already mentioned, there aren't many parts available for this lens, and Canon may not service it anymore. But there are repair shops that will service lenses Canon won't. It's a great lens, and I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

Attila,

Thanks for the welcome. I registered several months back and visit frequently. I've learned an awful lot, but haven't had much new information to contribute. I'm glad I was finally able to give someone some help. As my manual focus lens knowledge grows I'll hopefully be able to contribute more.

A very good friend uses it on his 5D and it is a great lens even wide open on the 5D sharpness goes right into the corners.
It is also a very usable lens which performs well in low levels of light and contrast.
Not cheap as you are paying for that extra stop but a very nice lens.

100% crop... whole image. Takes a while to load.

I think it's quite sharp wide open.. Sharp enough for me so I think 70-200 4L is going to be sold and this old friend will be the only AF lens I will own then anymore Wink

yuppp!!!! agree that this lens is supreme is every aspect, just a good blend of everything. I sold my 70-200mm 2.8, 70-200mm f4 and f4 IS (The f4 version is slight on contrasty side with "clinical" sharpness and the 70-200mm 2.8 is slight soft wide open compared to this 80-200mm 2.8, confident enuf to use it wide open most of the time when the lite is dim esp during indoor event...and its BLACK so nobody dare to look at you lens compare to the white Smile

I have turned down many opportunity to acquire this lens in the past. Looking the samples on this thread, I would say..WHY DID I DO THAT!!! This would have been a good one to have when situation necessitate the use of low light AF lens, much like the situation in your picture.

As you said, less people will be looking at that black cylinder. I have been asked of the news agency I am attached to just because of the white cylinder with red ring on my camera. No, I am not with any news agency, still in grad school.

Nowadays, people don't ask me such question, but they still look at my lens. This time at the uniqueness of the old MF lens I have attached; zebra, alu, pancake, etc.

FYI, the lens is also called Magic Drainpipe.

Enjoy and Salam (Peace).
