1.7/50 Planar?

My memory of when those shots were taken is a little blurry, but I think if anything it's probably a CJZ 135mm f/3.5 Sonnar.

When composing for subject isolation, I'm looking for smooth out-of-focus rendering: I do not want out-of-focus rendering which detracts from the subject. Often, being selective about ones background can payoff in these scenarios.

If it was nothing but Bokeh, I'd be changing the shim on the lens again.

1953 J-3 remount, Wide-Open by fiftyonepointsix, on Flickr

1953 Jupiter-3 5cm F1.5, remounted into a later focus mount. The focus mount required a lot of work to make right. As manufactured, the RF cam would not drive the RF past 5meters. This means grinding down the focus mount, moving the helical in closer to the image plane, and re-indexing all of the taps for the set screws. This lens required 1 1/8 turns to drive the RF to infinity, 3x the previous worst lens that I've adjusted. All taps lines up with their screws, so the focus mount was originally manufactured this far off. Lots of polishing down of corroded metal, finished using 3M polishing sheets used for fiber optic connectors. Works on aluminum.

Jupiter-3's made before 1954 are likely to have Schott glass in them. Those made up to ~1950 often have Zeiss manufactured optics in them. I have two J-3's with Zeiss serial numbers on the fixture for the rear triplet. The KMZ 5cm F1.5 groups are fully interchangeable with the German Sonnars.

The spirit of the kindness with which your words reach me is moving--thank you. But I be the master of nothing, possessing only the goal to master myself. Best jt

Ok, ok: its not bokeh only, but it's a bokeh comprised of manual lenses only Smile

Yashica ML 50mm/1.4 on Sony A7.

A couple of years ago, I chose the Canon FD lens line as my main set of vintage lenses for use on mirrorless digital and Canon EF chemical-process camera. I now have a pretty broad collection--17-500mm, including the legendary 85mm/1.2 L. The Canon FDn 50mm/1.4--for example--impresses me so much that I now have three.

However, the performance of the ML 50mm/1.4, 1.7 and 2 are motivating me to look at a Contax/Yashica collection instead. I had a Zeiss Planar T* 50mm/1.4 and really liked it, but I think I prefer the Yashica ML 50mm/1.4, even if some reviewers say it is "not quite a Planar".

Has the original bokeh only theme been lost?

I make a practice of raking a picture of the ground to signal a change of lens. This one I actually like. Primoplan 1.9/58.

Just wonderful Like 1 . Sub Clover? If so, you must be out in farmland somewhere. If not, then it's reached everywhere Smile.

That glow is quite compelling.
