OK - here goes, sorry it's so late. This is absolutely a true story, as it happened.
It was 1982. My office was in London but I was running a construction project in the centre of Glasgow, and every week I flew up from Heathrow on the shuttle to inspect the work. I had an arrangement with the builder that he would meet me each week at the airport at 9.00 and take me to the site.
On this particular day I caught the early shuttle and arrived at Glasgow with about an hour to spare, so I thought I'd have some breakfast and I went into the restaurant in the airport terminal. It was huge, at least a hundred tables, and I was the only person there. It was empty! I waited by the entrance and after a while a waitress came up and asked if I wanted breakfast. I said yes and asked if I could sit next to a window so I could watch the aircraft outside.
Well, out of all the empty seats in the room, there in front of the very seat she took me to, was a bowl of steaming porridge! The only one in the room as far as I could see. I couldn't work this out. Why was the porridge there? Why had she taken me to this particular seat? I sat and pondered this for a while and came to the conclusion that she must have meant me to eat it, a kind of "Welcome To Scotland" thing. (Of course I've since realised no Scot would dream of being so generous to a southern sassenach, but I was a bit naive in those days). Anyway, after a few minutes wondering about it I decided to pick up the spoon and start to eat it.
YUK!! Salt!! Really salty I mean. Now us soft Englishmen are used to having sugar on our porridge, so this was something else. To me it tasted foul, but I thought to myself it would be rude to leave it now that I've started it and, anyway, I had to show them us English aren't as soft as they think, so I gritted my teeth and kept on eating, looking out of the window at the aircraft and trying not to be sick.
Now have you ever had that feeling someone is watching you? I began to feel it myself, very strongly, and I turned round to see. There by the table was a gigantic Scotsman - you know the sort, like the bloke in the Highland Games on the front of the Scott's Porridge Oats box, with red hair and a big beard. He glowered down at me and I quivered. "And who's been eatin' ma porridge?" he bellowed.
I started to shake with fear and go red with embarrassment. Like Goldilocks I wanted to run. I tried to apologise but it came out as a stutter. Then all of a sudden his eyes began to twinkle and a smile appeared on his lips. "Did ye enjoy it?" he asked. I couldn't say no could I? I just went "Mmmmm", still quivering in my boots.
"Did ye not find it a tad salty?" he asked. "Well, yes, a bit" I mumbled. "I'm nae surprised", he said. "The lid came off the salt cellar as I was shakin' it, and I've just been to the kitchen to ask for another bowl".
And then he started to laugh. That broke the ice and I started laughing too, and we both laughed together till our sides ached and tears in our eyes. They brought him a new bowl of porridge and we had breakfast together till it was time to go, and I've been chuckling about that morning ever since. |

That's the marvellous thing about porridge - you can eat it with salt or sugar, though preferably not at the same time.
Some diehards insist that salt is the only way, but I have been known to take it with honey.
Did you ever hear the story about the Aberdeen student who spent all his grant money and had to live for the remainder of the term on porridge? He bought several sacks of the stuff, made up a huge batch and left it to set in the drawers of a cabinet. Every day he'd consume a ration of this filthy stuff until, several weeks later he collapsed and was hospitalised, suffering from malnutrition.
It only goes to show you can have too much of a good thing. _________________ Dave

I am eating the stuff every day - steel cut oats. With fruit. No salt. Love it.
