I love the Planar 50/1.4 for great colors, best 3d image and lovely out of fcocus. Mechanically very good and heavy. One problem very soft at 1.4 and lot CA at 1.4-2.0

In my experience I found one of the best ones:

Olympus OM 50mm f1.4
Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 1.4
Nikkor 50mm f1.4

You can find samples in /gallery with many others too.

Despite the fact that I have never ever tried any 1.4/50 mm lens or similar ---

except PLANAR 1.4/50 ... this is only one lens for EOS 20D --- I would go for ... Smile

1-focus to infinity with a proper adapter for EOS --- GUARANTEED...
2-perfect for FLASH -- absolutely --- (it may have more red)
3-stop-click is fascinating
4-colour rendition is ACCURATE Smile
5-never ever can disappoint you
6-handling with this lens is FINE and INTUITIVE Smile
7-keeps its performance AT all distances .. Smile

if you want some examples -- please ask..

I have Contax 50/1.5, Tomioka 55/1,4 and Yashica Yashinon-DX 50/1.4.

I choose the first for detail, distorsion and color rendition, and the second for bokeh. I didn't use the Yashica too much... I must try it seriously (too many lenses, too little time).

I still love my nikkor 50/1.4 AI, but have others to play it safe. Hard to beat the nikkor

My bad, it's a "normal" planar 50/1.4. I just mistyped (even if Freud would say that I was thinking to one of my dreams, alas using a Sonnar 50/1.5 on a digital camera).

even though I do miss focus sometimes I love my S-M-C Takumar, specially for portraits:

and I find it's bokeh very pleasant:

hope you will get your lens soon and enjoy it as much as I do.

and sorry, I forgot to mention: all were taken in Kathmandu, Nepal, actually just about 2 weeks ago.
Here a link to my folder with photos taken with this very lens: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuan/sets/72157605746644529/
there you can see them in full size incl. EXIF, date and some more info I may have added.
