There are two optical constructions of the Minolta MC-X 2.5/100mm. The earlier one is a [6/5] design, the later a very similar [5/5]. Nevertheless the later (and simpler) designs is clearly better, especially at f2.5 and f4. The later MC-X design was used also for the forthcoming MD series. The latest (MD-III) version seems the best to me, due to its coatings and the built-in, double-extractable lens hood. A really nice small and fast 100mm lens!

Mine is the 4th version I think, it has the 1 meter close focus that apparently identifies it as such. It's a great lens, I use it a lot.

Good or great but cheap lenses in my opinion:
Derek Gardner (and other names), a japanese 100mm f2.8
Canon Fd 70-150mm f4.5 (peanuts price)
Osawa 70-210mm f4 macro (good but tricky)
Minolta 100-200mm f5.6
Mamiya 110mm (actually not very cheap!)
A bunch of projection and enlarger/printer lenses (Lomo 90 110 120mm; Colorplan CF 90mm; Pako; Agfa Color-Magnolar 105mm (vintage style) and Color Agolon 90mm).

I guess you mean the Mamiya Sekor C 2.8/110mm ?
That's a lens I'd love to have ... If it's as good as the other Mamiya Sekor C tele lenses I have, i would outperform all other lenses on your list. Did anyone here use the Sekor C 2.8/100mm on FF digital cameras?

Yes, Stephan, that lens! And I agree with you that it would outperform the other lenses. But we know that a lens is interesting when it adds some distinctive features...

I'm +1 for the Nikon Series E. Best 100mm lens I've used.

Yes, excellent image quality, and it's really quite amazing how cheap it is considering it's a Nikon.

I know it's a Series E lens and not a Nikkor, but it's still great.

I have one too, had to get it from Japan. Really nice lens.
Here is a fun bokeh/sharpness camparison.

The Colorplan CF is the wrong version of that lens to look for - CF stands for Curved Field, you want the non-CF version.

The Bronica Zenzanon-S 3.5/105 is a great lens, better than the Mamiya 100mm, had both, sold the Mamiya as the Zenzanon was markedly better.

My actual favourite 100mm-ish lens is a Ross Xpress f3.5 4inch, a truly stunning lens with as much 3D pop as I've ever seen in any lens. I can't recommend it though as I have the only copy I have ever seen in existence, it's in a very thick andh eavy aluminium barrel with M42 mount. I think it's a pre-production sample made in the early 50s that never made it into serial production. if you ever see one for sale, grab it.

Interesting, but I really meant the CF version (sharp, very smooth all around the focal point). I agree that Ross has made wonderful lenses starting from 90-110mm up to... (I don't remember the exact inch measure).

Excellent! Maybe they are not very cheap, as it is not the already mentioned Mamiya.

Which Mamiya lens are you talking about? The SX 2.8/100mm? The Mamyia 2.8/100mm for the Universal?

Anyway... I was talking about Mam. 110mm f2.8 (for RZ67), not Mam. 100mm, which is a different one.

I think you ware talking about the C for 645 before. Which is half the price of the Z which is for 6x7

I was talking about the rz67 lens, which truly is expensive.
Maybe the 645 version is the same, but I am not sure about it.

If you want a really stunning rz67 lens, it's the Macro 140mm f/4.5 L-A. I had one, sold it for twice what I paid for it to fund a camera purchase.

Another lens type which comes to mind: Isco Ultra Star for projection (almost the same as Schneider Kreuznach Cinelux). SOMETIMES it is cheap; sharp in the center with nice bokeh; excellent light transmission, very useful in low light; slight CA.

PostPosted: Sun Aug 16, 2020 4:00 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

The Isco Ulta Stars and Schneider Cineluxes are quite different lenses in how they render, the ISCOs have much less contrast, both suffer from a lot of purple fringing, but it can usually be removed quite well in PP. The Cineluxes are far better lenses to adapt for camera use as many of the Ultra Stars are very big and heavy. With both, only the ones from 45mm up can be used on dslrs, the shorter ones have FFDs that are too short so can only be used on MILCs.

If you are willing to go with a Nikon mount, the 100mm f/2.8 Series E is a very good choice. They can be found on Ebay for $75-$100.

Well Nikon E being mentioned several times one must consider Kaleinar-5N 2.8/100mm also.

Wray Supar 4", but it's f4.5, not 2.8
