I guess I fall into the camp that doesn't believe that it's all about having a wide aperture. IMO it's all about composition and microcontrast. When it nails the focus, I can get nice "3D" images with the Sigma 30 (but my Nikkor 28/2.8 just doesn't seem to do the trick). When I nail the focus my CV 58 is brilliant. It's the transition from in focus to out of focus that does it for me, and that all just gets lost a lot of the time if you shoot wide open. Having the lens stopped down a bit makes the transition to out of focus that much more gradual, kinda like the human eye.

Same here. I get the impression that lots of people think subject isolation by thin DOF is the same thing as the "3D effect".

I think the Contax/Rollei Distagon 35/1.4 displays the strongest 3D effect of all images that I've seen. The image in this post is one of the best I've seen so far: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/839374/64#10058871
It's not the separation from the OOF background that creates the effect here, but the great microcontrast in the in-focus parts and the very special focus transition.

My definition of a 3D image is when the subject appears to move in relation to the background as you move your head. All the images in this thread and every other thread are 2D

you are not the only one who are against the use of 3D term for 2D pics
guess what, Canon also use the term 3D for the last 24-70II
seems Canon finally find the secret of 3D lens!
but it will cost 2300$

Well, my half a century old Meyer Primagon 4.5/35 that cost me 34ukp does all the 3D I need.

Pretty pictures.
The suggestion was for a 3D lens not a 3D post production.
HDR will give a #D look for sure. It's hardly natural. I had to look twice to see if these were actually CG.
The 1st is quite stunning even if it does look quite "cooked".

My wife took this picture today. Her compact camera broke down, so I just set her an Admiral 28mm f2.8 at f4 that she could photo the carneval...I was amazed at 3D effect on this photo! It really is true that f number doesn't matter a lot. I compared this Admiral to a Flektogon 35mm f2.4 and Flektogon clearly produces more 3D effect when I shoot the same object... I can just wonder how the photo would appear with the same composition if it was shot with the Flektogon... On the other hand, before I went back to MF, I shot alot with Sigma 18-200mm...I can't think of any photo that has snown any 3D effect (boring flat stuff)...

3D effect in my opinion rather subject than lens dependent.

Looks great but is it proper 3d, as Orio (and others) have shown with posts........it has to be 3d in depth.

Pentax FA-43

Meyer Trioplan 100

These lenses also do a great job of conveying depth. No PP necessary either

Appropriate use of balanced flash is a good way of getting the 3d pop with any lens.......

from the lenses I have experience with the 55mm Takumar sometimes made me think that the photo taken had some 3D quality,

first one taken with a Super Takumar f1.8/55mm, second with a Auto Takumar f1.8/55mm ( zebra ) and the other 3 with a Auto Takumar f2/55mm
