Not sure if this is "3D" or not, but I love this shot, nice use of HDR.

Zeiss Prakticar 1.4/50mm (DDR Planar)

It must be me. I don't see any 3D at all in any of these pictures in this thread (apart possibly from Klaus's cross-eyed double ones but, try as hard as I can, I just can't overlay the two images). Some have lots of "pop", but I guess it's impossible to create 3D on a 2D plane.

It's mystical concept alright but you sure don't need 3D glasses to experience it Wink.

This is better. Still you don't mention the lens.

Looking at an old thread here and this shot has plenty of pop.

Outstanding!
Any idea what was used to produce this?

Some photos to explain the kind of shot I'm talking about (both with the 35mm L):

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM

I don't think I have any 3D lenses per say, but if I had to choose, I'd say this is the most 3-D'ish lens I own. Unfortunately, this image was taken at ISO6400 and much of the microcontrast was lost as a result. However, at lower ISO, I find this lens renders a strong depth effect under certain conditions.

Thank a lot!

High-quality German lenses by Leica and Zeiss have been described as having a '3-D' effect, though I have never understood what this meant. A certain combination of optical properties, under certain conditions, sometimes gives a dramatic image that some people call a '3-D' effect. I don't worry about it myself, or look for it. Don't worry about it. I used to use a lot of Kodachrome 25 with my Leicaflex cameras and lenses, and I did note a rather 'realistic' image quality was obtained from time to time, almost life-like and three-dimensional. But I attributed it as much to the Kodachrome as to the lens. It is an elusive thing in any event, and now that K25 is gone....oh well!

Now even though this image is fantastically sharp and the background is blurred nicely, I don't see any pop in it myself. I imagine that's because there isn't enough blurred area in the picture, and what there is is too indistinct.

So it seems that pop happens when the subject is very sharply focussed and the background is only partially blurred and also continuous around the subject. So it is a happy coming together of various factors:

Distance to the subject
Distance to the background
Focal length
Aperture setting
Lens sharpness

Do you think the type of film has any real influence?

Certainly! Film is partially responsible for color vividness and grain (detail & definition) can add or take away some of the realism. You did not mention the factor of "image representation size" above. You cannot feel 3D in small images. One important factor is also contrast (shadows). Few things can also improve dimensionality: substance in air (snow, rain, fog) and having objects that proceed throughout photo from close to far distance (road, wall, fence...).

Yes, of course the film matters.

That lens (the 560mm Telyt-R f/6.Cool is a cemented single-group, two-element design. It produces a very interesting image quality. I think it is due to the construction, in part, which allows the lens to have extraordinarily high contrast. The design is deliberately simple to provide light weight and high contrast. This design cannot be adapted to a high speed (f/6.8 is about the largest aperture) because it would not be sharp, but who wants to carry around a 560mm f/4 lens? I sure as hell don't. The lens is extraordinary in every way.

Thanks, I guessed there are other factors involved - I should have added "any more?" Smile

I don't see 3D in any images unless I'm wearing red/cyan glasses at the cinema Smile and even then it's fleeting. I keep losing it.
