Does anybody here have experience with the Auto Rikenon 55mm f1.4?

According to m42artlimited it is identical with the 55mm f1.4 Mamiya Auto Mamiya/Sekor, & Yashica /Yashinon lenses.

Takumar 55mm f1.8 are readily and cheaply available here, but I wonder if I should give the Rikenon a try.

cheers,
Andreas

Takumar 55mm f1.8 - not, but Takumar 1.4/50 - yes. In my opinion.

Rikonen 1.4/55 is really very good lens. Pretty sharp wide open with nice bokeh.

But for me the best performers are cosinon 1.8/50 and....

cosinon 1.4/55

Oi, don't disrespect Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8. Considering it's price it is well worth getting. I picked one up the other day for £10. Well worth it in my opinion. I would post some shots, but the M42 adapter is hidden somewhere Very Happy.

I don't. I wrote: "in my opinion". Maybe I had not perfect one. The 1.8/55. It is often that 2 lenses the same brand, with the same parameters are no equal regarding performance. I have two S.Takumars 1.4/50 and both are very good.

That lens (Rikenon/Mamiya-Sekor/Yashinon) is reputed to be a Tomioka.

I have the same, with the Sears brand, which was probably licensed via Ricoh or Mamiya.

Very worthwhile I think, and you can probably get it cheap.

Theres no reason not to have a bunch of 50mm's at the prices they are going for.

Good if you can find a cheap one.

Hah! I've just referenced that thread in Film Cameras - An Unexpected Nikon.

wow, thank you so much everybody for your replies!

montecalro - often I had posted the same link, even in this forum, but I was not aware that the sears it the same lens!

great samples voytek, they look very good!

luise already I have a few 50mm: the Pentak M50mm f2, the SuperTak 50mm f1.4 and the S.M.C. Macro Tak 50mm f4. I'd think that 55mm on a x1.5 dSLR could be very attractive for portraits, though the Rikenon may be too sharp for that?

The Super Tak by far is my fastest lens which often comes in handy, but it so very often flares heavily. Well, I am not sure if it is called flaring really, but often images have very weird reflections all over the frame which make the whole image look out of focus - and that not only during day, sometimes even at low light. That makes me think that using a hood alone would not solve the problem, but that my lens might not be too good, that these reflections could be caused by the fungus the lens also has?
- Thus my desire for an other 50ish lens with f1.4...though I guess I shall get a S.M.C. Takumar 50mm f1.4 along the road also.

The Rikenon I found is offered in a japanese auction, it at stands at 9 USD starting price. I may try to get it!

cheers,
Andreas

wow Daniel, these are very nice photos indeed, great for wide open!

It seems that you just newly opened your flickr account, I hope there will be many more photos taken with manual lenses soon!

May I ask, do you also have any other 50/55mm, any other 50mm Takumar? And if so, how you think they compare?

No 50mm Takumar, yet. I got Super Takumar 20mm, 35mm, 55mm, 135mm, 150mm and S-M-C Takumar 300mm. My 50's are Meyers.

I am working on extending the Manuals on flickr. Just takes time, which I don't have as much as I'd want.

Very nice pictures with Takumar

lost the bid for the Rikenon, it was sold for 35 USD ( just over my maximum bid )
but was in luck today, found a S.M.C. Takumar 50mm f1.4 in good condition for just 20 USD.
I am very happy about this lens because my Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 often renderes crazy blurriness, I suppose caused by in lens reflections.
I hope this won't happen as much with the S.M.C.
I also noticed that these two lenses are not identical in construction: The S.M.C. is deeper ( bigger ) and it has 8 aperture blades whereas the Super Tak only has 6.

cheers,
Andreas
