Finally got one - had to see for myself what all the fuss was about. I'm impressed. One of the cheapest lenses in the world and it kicks the arses of lenses costing a hundred times as much. I like this lens - and to think I used to have one about 30 years ago and never gave it a moment's thought.

Wild Cherry hedgerow trees. I never knew that many of the trees around here were Wild Cherry - until last week, when they all suddenly burst into bloom at the same time. Now they're all turning pink - quite a sight. It's been a strange spring and summer and most years you don't see this.

I'm not too crazy about the bokeh - I much prefer the Tamron smoothy stuff.

100% crop.

You can find beauty in the dirt - a pink flower (I don't know what it is) growing out of a pile of concrete blocks; amazing tenacity.

But this knocked my socks off when I saw it. I can't believe a lens that cost a fiver can do this.

The obligatory middle distance shot - road, trees, poles.

Great shots, Dave!!

My favs, are #5 and #6, but all are nice.
You're right!, the 44s are nice lenses. I own two of them (44-2 and 44M-6) and I like them so much, wonderful for closeups...

Jes.

nice series Dave
the helios is amazing
when I compared it to the leica macro 60 I was surprising to find about the same bokeh and rendition

Still the "sleeper" lens. The best bargain you can normally get.
If somebody asks me with which lens he should start to try MF lenses, I always say a Helios-44-2. Because if he doesn't like to focus manually, he still will talk to you. But chances are high that he gets addicted.
This was one of my first lenses as well...

Thanks for your kind comment, guys. I really should have had a couple of Helios 44s six months ago, but the seller just disappeared with my money. They were even cheaper - a fiver for the pair.

You mean 2&3 and 4&5?
Different days - the cherry blossom was this morning with a slight breeze and sun still climbing in the sky. The pink flower was mid afternoon one day a week ago and the sun was falling but still very bright. The flower was actually in my shadow, which helped a bit - there was a helluva lot of light bouncing around from the white wall of the building behind it.

Great link! Do you know what the column labelled

Разрешающая
способность
центр/край

is about? Is it the resolution? The others I can figure out from context ...

I tried on film Helios-44, 44-m4, 44-m6, 77m4. They are afraid of the sun in front. SMC Pentax K55/1.8 noticeably it is better.

The other day I have used the Helios-44M-4 for some shots. Even if it had the hood on, it flared like crazy - BUT - while half of shots were trash, the other half looked great - somehow the flare gave it a flavour of "hot sun" that was really pleasureable!
So once again the secret is - get to know your lenses! Even a weakness can become a strenght, if you know when and how to use it.

Neither do I with my copy if 44-2. But my 44-M-4 has problems. Perhaps the lens has a fault which I can not see.

I have got a 44-2 and a 44M-6. The M6 is a little sharper but the 44-2 has more character. So I decided to sell the M6 again (and just did some days ago).
