The place called "Asakusa" was and is a typical downtown in Tokyo, and
still is crowded with local people and foreigners too. The place was a town
developed around the temple and grew, its surrounding area is also
very interesting place. One is entertainment area and some wholesaler
shop town nearby. I do not show entertainment area, have no photos. Very Happy

The first half were shot by D700 + Distagon 35/2 ZF
Today Asakusa is surrounded by modern buildings and some funny thing.

The entrance to the temple

The both of path to the temple have many shops as you see

Eating samples and buying

This large lantern the symbol of Asakusa was donated by the owner of Panasonic Co. Ltd.

This is a woodblock print by "Hisroshige" long time ago (the same place) copied from some online Ukiyoe at Wikipedia

Some other shops nearby

Then another is showing the old AD machine.

100% crop of panel, which shows how people were advertising things when there was no radios not TVs

This group is called "Chindon-ya" since that era, this is rare species today (no one want to do it by yourself Y'know Very Happy ), but very effective at local shopping mall
They are a modern version of ads people in the painting above photo.

The second half were mainly done by OM-2N + Zuiko 24/2 and Fuji Reala.
This area is called "Kappa-bashi", which has many wholesalers who sell anything related to restaurant/eatery business and your kitchen needs.

My wife is checking replica of foods (tempura, sushi, etc.), they are rather expensive thou.

Another same kind of store selling bigger items (water-melon, turkey?, Beers and sodas)

Mostly porcelains at this store

This store too

at many kind of lantern shop

Used like in this way (in Kyoto, Ponto-cho D700 + Distagon 28/2)

Neon-sign too

Today this area (Asakusa) is tourist's mecca in Tokyo, but there are sill many places to explore this part alone. They also have one of biggest
festivals in Tokyo, and many smaller festivals for flowers, plants, and some other items for new year too. Japanese love festivals.

Thanks not only for these great images but also for letting us have the chance to view screens from life at somewhere far far away from where we are now.

Very nice, Koji. They remind me very much of my visit to Japan in 1983. It's nice seeing so many shots of the day-to-day life of the folks who live there.

I visted Asakusa as well, and I'm sure I have some slides I took while I was there, but I don't remember anymore which are my Asakusa slides. I labeled some, but not all of them. If I can find some Asakusa slides, would you mind if I added to your fine collection?

@Tharos

You are very welcome. I plan to go to Turkey or Egypt the next year, but not
sure yet. We missed to go Egypt the last year due to my son's sudden
serious sickness, but my son said long ago we should visit Turkey.

@cooltouch

No problem to add your photos. I just wanted to share some of my
trip to Tokyo (I was borne in Tokyo actually, but I see it in different angle).

Excellent pieces of Tokyo life for a nice virtual trip to such far and mysterious (at least to me Smile ) place.

Cheers, Marty.
