Hi,

I'm looking to buy Arista Premium (rebranded Tri-X) from Freestyle Photo in the US, but as a European it isn't cheap. I hoped others would maybe be willing to also get in on this so we can cut down on shipping costs.
Leave a reply here or shoot me a message if you want to do a group buy. Other Freestyle-photo stuff is of course also welcome. My only concern is to cut down on shipping as much as possible!

unfortunately shipping is not the biggest pain, income duties are Evil or Very Mad

Why import Tri-X when there are good 400 speed films available in the EU?

HP5 17m rolls for 14.95eu from Germany:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ilford-HP5-35mm-Meterware-17m-Surveillance-400-P4-R537-/271143586227?pt=DE_Analoge_Fotografischer_Film&hash=item3f216ac9b3

Maco Eagle TS 400 is the same price from Germany too, it's superpanchromatic (extended red sensitivity) so like Ilford SFX but a lot cheaper, can be used as normal bw film or stick a deep red filter on it and use it as IR film.

I don't shoot fast films, 125 (FP4) or slower is my preference, but I want to try the Maco Eagle 400 sometime for some IR shots.

Last time my friend in Ohio sent me 2000 ft film with 10 usd declaration, dhl gives it to me at my house without asking any money. The custom also listened to my request and hand checked it. Laughing

HP5 ≠ P4 Surveillance

from what I´ve seen it´s a good material, but really isn´t same as Tri-X

Holy moses, that's an amazing story haha.

So, any US members that would be willing to be a middle-man for US?
I got a lot of friends in the US because I lived there for a while, so I'll ask them too.

Any other people that would like to order stuff from Freestyle photo?

I'm not a big fan of HP5. I push my film to 1600 almost always and HP5 doesn't push very nicely I think.

Arista / Tri-X is a nice film that I would like, unfortunately Italian customs do not listen to any reason/excuse and always apply the highest possible taxes on import.

There shouldn't be any customs when I send it from the Netherlands, because it's in the EU already, right? Wouldn't it be only if it got send directly to Italy?

yeah this "patch" with relay and declaring lower value sometimes work. in my country duty officers really are not so dumb to believe ridiculously low price, so if there´s even slight shade of doubt, they ask for proof of price or simply calculate price according to "ussual" price of film in shop - and that can make the price even higher as ussual Rolling Eyes

To send from Nederland is fine, no usual price on second hand film , so I think your officers are dumb and not legal what they do, thank for GOD Hungarians customs did keep law and didn't play as expert on second hand stuff.

I have to ask, why do you push to 1600? Surely it compresses the tonal range, increases grain and produces inferior results? 400 film is not so great to begin with, pushing is not going to help.

I'm not attacking you in any way, I'm just intrigued to hear your reasons for doing it as I'm sure you have reasons why and I'm always keen to learn about different techniques and concepts when it comes to shooting film. Smile

Yes, correct.
Well, if you let me know what price you can make for 1 or 2 bulk rolls of Arista Premium, and for shipping them to Italy (at least registered, preferably insured), if the total cost
is one that I can afford (I don't have much cash availability at the moment), I will be glad to partecipate.

I like to shoot street photography a lot and that's when I really need the speed. I like shooting at least at 1/500 and f/11 (or even higher) and a lot of the times 1600 ISO helps out a lot. I zone focus so the big depth of field is a big help.
I don't really care about the small tonal range and grain and all that stuff.

Depending on how much shipping to Italy is I think 50-55€ would be possible. Much better than paying 90€+ for a roll of Tri-X in Europe.

Yeah, last time I was in Prague, look at the film price in some shops and I almost kill myself.
5 Euro for Kodak Colorplus 200 and Superia 200, wow.

true, these are prices for desperate tourists in overpriced souvenir shops. it´s better to stock up film when some good deal shows up. as I think about it, I cannot remember last time I bought film in normal shop:)

TijmenDal: 55€ is for 100ft roll right?

Since i use films, I have never bought anything in shop.
My best deal with films is Konica Minolta Centuria 200 for 50 cents/roll, I got 200 rolls. Laughing

55eu is pretty expensive.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190722926024?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

14.90eu for 17m. Don't know how it pushes because I don't push films.

maco surveillance is cheaper alternative, but
1) that is completely different film
2) the price is without shipping costs
