Hi Colleagues,

I'd like to apologize for my limitted knowledge of the english language. I try to be polite, but I'm afraid sometimes I might be perceived as not, specially for our native british speakers. I say so because an english friend of mine that speaks a wonderful spanish, recently heard me talking in "english" with another person and told me that I probably be perceived as "rude" and "uneducated"...

That's the problem with the different cultures and ways of speaking.
So if at any time I'm too direct, please keep in mind that is the normal way we communicate here.

And having said so, and to show my own ignorance, I'd dare to ask about a sentence I cannot properly understand:

I'm looking forward to receive my FED-2 rangefinder camera.
Veijo was so kind to warn me about not to change the film speed "without having the shutter cocked".

Well, I can imagine what this can mean, but since I could put the FED-2 on stress, I'd appreciate very much if anyone could explain me in other words what this does his really mean.... (I haven't had a FED-2 on my hands yet).

First of all, as a non-native speaker myself, I'd like to point out that your English is really excellent!!
(If I may say so - and I hope it is not too boastful - using capital letters at the right points help to read and understand a text also in English. )

Of course, it is always difficult to master the different levels of formality and especially English words and phrase have tiny differences in meaning and usage that non-natives (like us) perhaps never completely grasp.
BTW, speaking a language is different from writing a text. Perhaps your friend had the impression while listening to you.
Germans, like me, often have the same "problem". We are regularly regarded as "rude" when we talk. That's a reason for me to take special care of that, but sometimes I forget.


What Veijo means is that before you change the speed you should "load" or "activate" the shutter by turning the lever and thus advancing the film, because otherwise the shutter mechanism might be broken. This is an infamous disadvantage of the FED cams. But you get used to it quickly.

As an english speaker, i would like to say how I appreciate the effort all of our non-english speaking friends on this forum to use this very difficult language. Apologies are definitely not needed nor deserved. Having worked in three different languages (four if you count American) - I truly understand the hard work that goes into your every communication.

I sometimes use an online translater to leave feedback when buying from a German seller, for example. I wonder just how accurate it is, because when I use Babelfish to translate German webpages to English it comes out a bit strange sometimes. I can just imagine the sellers reading my feedback and saying 'Eh! What?"
I've probably just apologised for farting in their car, or something similar.

Orio, do you know the British TV series "Fawlty Towers" with John Cleese?

He plays a hotel manager, Mr Fawlty, who has a Spanish waiter, Miguel. Miguel only speaks a couple of words in English and you can imagine that misunderstandings play an important role in this comedy, since Fawlty only pretends to speak Spanish (but he doesn't).

In one episode, Fawlty asks Miguel to take some butter into the dining room and the script writers used "burro" as a punchline as well.

Great series, really funny!
