Orio, do you know the British TV series "Fawlty Towers" with John Cleese?

I don't know it. I watch very little TV anyway. But I doubt this kind of series is imported here, because from what you describe, it is strongly based on language gags, and most Italians do not know English, so the humour in it would not be understood.

Well, not all of it but a good part definitely is.

Peter, are you back from Paris?

Nope, we will be travelling to Paris on Monday by Eurostar train from London, then on 19th we will travel from Paris by train again to The Netherlands to see a friend of mine at Beverwijk who conducts an accordion orchestra. I have arranged some of the music for the concert. We will be leaving there on Monday 22nd to go back to Paris and catch the Eurostar home again.

We wanted to travel back to London on the Eurostar from Brussels, but it would mean buying single tickets for each leg, which are ?150 each (?300 return!!!) For some reason the return fare is only ?60 per person, so we need to travel back to Paris!! Confused

I am ignoring advice about travelling light with camera gear. Smile I'm taking the monopod, 400D with cards and batteries, a Spotmatic SP, 4 or 5 M42 lenses, and my new Yashica-Mat 124g TLR with Velvia 50 film.

Ooh, I found a nice model too! My son's g/f Rosie from Sydney - she is so beautiful and so calm in front of the camera! More to follow........

Some funny phrases of common usage all over the world have their origin from this series:
“Oh German! I thought there was something wrong with you.”
or
"And don't mention the war!"

Are you sure? I, for instance, don't understand the comical premise that must be behind this. It seems to me like an angry man beating the car with the first thing he can find... ? Confused

Orio, you should see that. It is not about what he does, it is about how he does it. Cleese is a "king of comedy". But then, of course, it is a special kind of, a monty-pythonesque comedy. (No wonder, it's Cleese.)

See? It's too easy to make wrong assumptions about sentences. We have heard it so we think everyone must have too. But for instance, I have never heard those sentences that you think are commonly used worldwide.
Similarly, I am sure that there are zillions comical Italian sentences that are completely unknown and not understandeable outside of here.

I never heard of him, and now that I have his Wikipedia image in front of me, I can also say for sure that I never saw him. So unfortunately whatever nuances there might be in his acting that his fans appreciate, would be lost to me.

I really think that humour is the least exportable genre of comedy. And in fact, with a very few exceptions, you see that this kind of films and series are usually not exported worldwide, while dramatic films or sentimental comedies, that deal with more universal themes and are not so dependant on local traditions, are seen and known everywhere.
An easy example: we know of a lot of great dramatic Japanese movies (Ozu, Kurosawa, etc). But how many Japanese comedies do we know here in the West?
Humour, is very locally dependant.

@ Lahnet

OK, I saw your first three links, and I now I think I have got an idea of the type of comedy.

I think that example #3 makes it evident what I wanted to say. Only people who can understand spoken English would get the joke of "on those trays".
And, this is a clear example of why this series was not exported here: it is not possible to translate this joke in other languages: it works only with English.

In Italy, we have a comedian (now defunct) that we rank very high, he's called Tot? (a nickname of course), and he based a lot of his comical sketches on word puns.
His sketches can only work for an Italian audience, and they are not just possible to translate to other languages. So I am sure that very few, if none, of you, have ever heard of Tot? - while here it is regarded as high as dramatic actors like Mastroianni or Loren or Cardinale which I am sure most of you have heard of.

Yes, that's true.

Thanks for the links, lahnet.
I have watched it a little again. And, gosh, I think it is hilarious!!!
But I do like British humour which is exactly my kind of wit and I like Monty Python. Wink

As far as Fawlty Towers is concerned, I have to admit that I've the complete collection on DVD and the scripts published in a book. Embarassed
