Well, I respect him for his contribution to the art of photography, but many of his images leave me cold. I have trouble finding a beating heart behind there. Something that I can find in every Cartier Bresson photograph, instead, although I understand that technically, he was full of defects while Adams was a master.

In any case, I find the decision of the Group f/64 of limiting themselves to f/64 fairly stupid. If I can get a great photograph by artistic use of the full aperture, bokeh, etc, I do.
As I do use the f/64 (when my lenses have it), when I think that the shot requires it.

These restricting rules are stupid because they limit the potential of the tool. Which on the contrary I think should be exploited at the fullest because the tool is the tool for a goal, not the goal in itself.

He was a milestone for photography and his zone system often helps me.
I like most of his pics a lot!

But I also agree to Orio about the f64-thing.
A restriction to f64 also limits your photographic possibilities. Of course, at f64 he was not able to shoot pics like Cartier-Bresson and the other masters of street photography.

I think that behind his choice there is a philosophical ideology that is typically positivist: the reality is there, to be touched, f/64 grants (this is actually techinically incorrect, but it gives the idea) that the camera does not select a part of reality with more importance than another.

Personally, I do not believe that reality exists - the objects do, but not reality- and therefore I am convinced that everything is interpretation and selection, including the f/64 - in the mere moment that a photographer points his camera to something, he has already operated a surgery on the objects, leaving out things, selecting HIS reality - which is not the reality of another person.
Therefore, every interpretation is admissible- maximum sharpness, soft focus, maximum DOF, full aperture. Every picture tells of one reality - the reality of the photographer. That is enough for me.

Does an objective reality exist?

I have thought a lot about questions like this.

I guess, it is all a matter of definition. And language often curbs philosophical thoughts.

Ansel was a perfectionist first, then technician then artist. What we learn from Ansel is almost the ultimate in technical prowess. His prints are more like the work of miniaturists than a great painter - full of the most intricate detail. His art was almost the technique. It is for this we rank him among the greats. Cartier Bresson was almost the other end of the spectrum - technique was almost thrown out of the window. These are the views my wife told me to put up

Yes, perhaps somewhere in between the two extremes, would be the ideal.

But if I have to choose between the two extremes, the heart and the brain, I choose the heart. Why? Because the heart can forgive, the brain can forget.
