AF lens doesn't

Not really certain this post belongs here, since it involves an AF lens. Nevertheless:

Brought in a Sigma AF lens yesterday that does not autofocus at all. The motor is totally unresponsive. It does not give forth even a grunt, or make any noise at all, when it should be trying to AF. There is only silence.

The lens is in decent cosmetic shape and the glass is OK. The lens is free mechanically both as to focus and zoom. I bought it on eBay and it was supposed to be in good used condition. Ha! Ha! But the seller probably never even tested it.

I've never worked on an autofocus lens. Do the motors burn out? Do wires come loose internally? How do they fail?

One thing about the lens seems good electrically: When I adjust the zoom the numbers are changing in my viewfinder. This has to mean there is at least some communication between lens and camera body. But the focus function of this lens is totally dead.

I know some Sigma lenses need to be upgraded to support some cameras. Have you tried to Google your camera and lens combination?

If that is old lens it might not work on some cameras. Depends what camera you have and what lens it is

A lot of older sigmas may not work on your body combo, also the 70-300 is a terrible lens that strips lens gears so probably broken

Thanks, guys. I was unaware of incompatibilities with Sigma AF lenses and Sigma digital camera bodies. I'll have to look into that.

The camera body is Sigma SD14. The lens is a Sigma UC 28-105mm, probably off an older film camera body (not sure).

The contact pattern is, of course, right. It's identical to another Sigma AF lens I own, a 28-80mm, which does work just fine.

However, I concede my 28-80mm lens is quite new, or at least it was NOS. But I think it almost surely was made in this century.

The UC 28-105mm lens, which does not work, has a somewhat older "feel" to it and could easily be from last century.

It's funny, I was always given to believe that AF lenses from Sigma film cameras would function just fine on Sigma digital cameras. Looks as if I might have gone off the rails on that one!!

I don't know why they wouldn't?

Problems are with Canon EF lenses. Sigma re-engineered the mount instead of licensing it and they left out something that digital cameras use.

Agreed. I've been researching this since one of the earlier posts. I have discovered the problem with Canon, as you state.

However

I've not discovered any reports of incompatibility between any Sigma AF lens and any Sigma camera body, film or digital. Said another way, Sigma lenses, with SA mounts, made for Sigma AF Camera bodies, should work on any Sigma AF camera body regardless film or digital.

This leaves me back where I started, with a bad lens. Sad

Does the aperture work?
Does it close when you press DOF check button?

Then some of the flat cables could be worn that could be fixable.
