This is NOT a test: I was gathering ideas for the ultimate test of portrait lenses and as I was snapping away I tried to photograph the same subjects. Everything was handheld and wide open. The focus point may be off, metering may be bad. No conclusions whatsoever can be made based on the series below Smile

Shot with my old Pentax *ist DS, in Av mode, auto WB, only converted from RAW to JPEG without further adjustments. Resized and sharpened with Absolute Sharpening.

OK, one conclusion that the A* 85/1.4 is a bit of a letdown. Way too much CA in my opinion, even stopped down.

A bit dark subjects maybe? At least on my monitor.
Anyway my preference goes to Pancolar (first place, superior clarity) and 1.9/85 Super-Takumar (second).
The Primoplan 1.9/75 might be good for soft focus portraits, but it would need more bright subjects for that .

Thanks for this work Peter, great post.

I like the Pancolar very much here and the Tak 85/1.8. And good that you brought the FA 77 in here, it's on my wishlist very on top Wink

Cheers
Tobias

FA77 and the Super-Tak are my favorites!

Very interesting,,,

From those (ceramic) mask shots I cannot see big differences, but from
the first set I like Pancolar best, FA77 is very sharp (probably sharper
than anyone else) but the image seems lifeless IMHO.

FA77 -- the winner... no doubts..

Others are behind this lens -- incl. Pancolar.. Cool

that's my view..

great portraits!
better skin color with pancolar, the 1.9 seems better in this series

Great portraits !!
The Pancolar is the clear winner in the portraits. There is not even competition in my point of view. The difference between the lenses is huge. With the Pancolar, all details are crisp and clear, and the focused areas pop out. With the Pentax, the texture of the photo is more flat (sometimes even looking muddy), and the focused area do not pop out as they should.

Maybe the SMC Pentax-A* 85mm f/1.4 isn't so bad after all Wink

VERY GOOD !!
Snappy, contrasty, nice OOF, I like it much.
No sign of CA in these samples.

Great shots!

Actually, each of these lenses does the job well.
But I also would say that the 77 and the 1.9/85 are my favs in the first set.
The Pancolar is very good but I don't see it as the clear winner.

I have shot with a Pancolar and was completely amazed by it.

But I have to say that the 77 has its excellent reputation not without a cause!

Need to have a second look at your fine shots in order to come to a conclusion.

I agree for the FA 77.
It would be nice to have some portraits taken with it, here. Wink

Now that I've received the 83mm f/1.9 Takumar I thought it should be interesting to perform another wide-open test.

It's bad weather and dark outside, so I have again made some wide-open shots (the A* was stopped down to f/1.8 because otherwise the DOF would be super thin and not comparable with the other lenses). Pentax K-7 on tripod; focusing was done through magnified Live View on the green applique. Shot in RAW; the white balance of the SMC Pentax-A* was applied to the other shots. So if the lenses have a color cast you should be able to see it. Or so I hope Smile

If I'm doing things right, please let me know. If I'm doing things wrong then please also let me know.

What I liked most in this series: Pentax-A 1.4/85
What I liked less: Komura

interesting again, thanks peter.
I think I have to look later again, I can't make any judgements at the moment. So similar but still so different samples ...

Cheers
