Since I started getting the focus confirm adapters I noticed that aperture priority doesn't work very well anymore. No big problem but AV mode would be nice.

I remembered reading once about switching from EF-A to EF-S in custom functions fixed the exposure problem with out changing screens. Cfn IV-2.
Only take maybe a minute to change or go back. I think you can set the 30D the same way but am not sure of the others/probably

I gave it a try and it seems to work fine. Here are four examples out of many to demonstrate.

Yashica 50mm/1.7
converted from RAW with no processing of any kind

Factory setting EF-A

Cfn-IV-2

Good idea! (I have not realized this problem, though, cause I have seized to use the chipped adapters more or less...)
BTW, I think you have confused the last two pics, haven't you?

Looks like it, but no, that is the way they came out.

I only had the problem when I went to focus confirm adapters.

Thanks much for the post.I did a few tests with my 40D today and it was pretty surprising. I will do a few more tomorrow and post the results.

On the 10D I have "AF lock /no AE lock" for that setting, is that what you have on the 40D?

Dave, in the 40D in custom functions

C.FNIV:OPERATION/OTHER

FOCUSING SCREEN
O:EF-A
1:EF-D
2:EF-S

After setting it says C.FN-5-2

I too get this unexpected result with the 400D with the AF chip. Open aperture pictures are darker than when stopped down. Unfortunately on the 400D I don't have this custom setting Sad

Hi Ron, Thanks for the heads up on this issue. You inspired me to do some testing.

I thought that the same thing may occur with AF lenses so I tested one also.

Here are the results:

The tests were done in subdued fairly constant light, almost a studio setting, my living room while the family was out doing errands.

The shot is of my fireplace mantle. Lots of stories there. (Mir 37 shot below)

The blue at the top right is from a brilliantly blue sky outside a nearby window. These shots are not sharpend or color tweaked in any way and not resized. They are 100% crops from the raw files converted to .jpgs, all focused on the cat's paw tip extended toward the viewer.

Here is the AF test, F2.8 Tamron 28-75.

Basically the EF-S setting is slightly sharper and more contrasty. The contrast gain is probably from the added sharpness. I didn’t take the AF test any further because I only wanted to see if the “EF_A – EF_S” issue was happening there also and if so is the EF_S setting is in fact, better. It is.

(The EF_D setting is not good, worse than the other two so I didn't test it further)

Here’s where it gets interesting:

Here are the results from the MF lens, A MIR 37mm with a chipped adapter.

First set at F2.8

EF_A

Here’s the EF_S setting

Considerably sharper and much less color artifacts.

I tested at F8 however the same differences were seen so I didn‘t feel the need to post it.

Here the MIR was set at F11.

EF_A

EF_S

Again, sharper and much less color artifacts.

Thanks again, my 40D is now set on EF_S

Jules

I'm very pleased that you had the same results that I did Jules. It makes life a lot easier doesn't it!

Ah, it's focusing screen related. Alas, the 10D had no firmware ability to cope with anything but the standard screen.
