I'm trying out Fomadon Excel, a Xtol clone, using it straight rather than as a one-shot. Tmax 400 TMY, SMC-Takumar 55/1.8, Y2 filter, ES-II.

Not a lot of shadow to check for shadow detail, but seems to work well
with TMAX. More importantly, how do YOU like it, Jussi?

A little overexposed, but is rendering some sharp details.

I have to develop a couple more with different films with the Excel, but it seems pretty good to use, and does provide some good gradation. I think the seeming over exposure was actually under-exposure which the scanner and I attempted to overcome - to try to get the tot and dog into a point of interest.

Here a few more from the same roll.

Xtol produces somewhat flat or grey negatives, for the above shots I had to work the levels a bit. However this makes for better scanning and potentially longer greyscale, at least so far... the 120 Agfa came out well also. As I'm reusing the developer - I should get a dozen rolls out of 1l - I'm looking forward to the soup getting a bit seasoned yet.

Looking forward to your further extolling of Xtol and on that note, I'd
better head for work. lol

I was going to say "lovely clarity!" but then I read you worked with levels... so it becomes impossible to evaluate.
Especially since I have print in mind, not scanning.

In any case photos very good!

Orio, perhaps, though there are ways to work the levels with printing as well.

here's an interesting page comparing different film/developer combinations - the second page lets you stack two on top of each other to compare.

Of course mileage will vary...

Of course but when you evaluate a negative you need to have an unadulterated view such as that on a light table.
Then, once you know what the negative can give, you can start planning about contrast printing strategies.

These are very nice. Thanks for the tip. I just ordered some "legacy" developer which is another vitamin "C" developer from Digital Truth.
The Fomadon Excel was not available from Freestyle til next month so I will try this one and see how it works.
