Excellent shots ! Shocked

You must have been very well hidden and against wind.
Congrats. Very Happy

These shots have really nice contrast and saturation and you got right up on those deer. That 300mm seems like a really nice model. I still don't have a great understanding of what's good and bad in the Nikon lens world (the 'H' lenses seem to be higher end).

Where were these taken?

Thanks...being red-green color deficient I have to be careful with saturation...one thing about the D610, the JPEGs are virtually identical to the RAW files so I don't need to change colors much...

No hiding at all...I walk up to them...maybe 40 feet...and walk parallel to their direction...they don't seem to mind...
It's a park in Florida where they are free to roam...two small "herds" of a half-dozen each...
Riverbend Park in Jupiter, Florida

Here's the lens and the pack I sling over my shoulder while biking on the approximately 10 miles of path through this nature...
It's the 300/4.5 Nikkor-H...the H and the H.C (multi-coated) are the 2nd generation after the "P"...it is a lot better than users of the later 300/4.5 ED give it credit for...[shhhh....don't say that too loud it'll raise ebay prices; it's still a fair price] it's also shorter than the ED (and the AI/AIS versions that came immediately after the "H") making for easier simultaneous focus and aperture control....

The first image of the bird is pure beauty.

How did you adapt the lens to use on the D610?

PostPosted: Mon Dec 08, 2014 3:24 am    Post subject: Reply with quote

One of the beauties of photography is not know exactly how light will "lay" on the sensor/canvas when frozen by time...but I'll take credit for it anyway...

The lens came to me with the optional factory installed AI aperture ring....like a few other pre-AI lenses of that era, including the 85/1.8-K...

Found another in the brush of thumbnails...

That's a nice looking lens. You may be color deficient, but you seem to overcome nicely. On the other hand, the Nikon standards for identifying lenses make me feel dyslexic.

It's a very handsome lens ! Smile

What are your feelings about the immediate next version Nikkor K 4.5/300mm ?
Has it the same design and image quality ?

I had that, the factory-issued K-AI version...it's the same optically, just longer distance between the focusing barrel and the aperture ring...a disadvantage for me...
The next version, optically, was the ED....even larger....then the ED/IF....since I get good results with this version, I see no reason to "upgrade"....

I have tried various versions of the same optical formula, e.g. 50/1.4 and 105/2.5 (though the latter has 2 optical versions) for the sole purpose of comparing the focusing, as the AI/AIS versions have a shorter rotational range and I'm not sure which I prefer....the slow gradual in-and-out of focus of the earlier version or the rapid/more distinct blur/sharp image of the AI/AIS lens on the focusing screen...I'm still up in the air about that...I understand that videographers prefer more gradual focusing for tracking shots.

Hi Kita...I just bought the P version for $79.00 should be here in 2 weeks.I also have the Pentax 300mm f4 in M42 which is also a nice lens.Nice pics by the way, can't wait to see how mine turns out.

That lens looks great.....
I got mine 8 years ago in anticipation of the day when I would be getting a Nikon body...its AI aperture ring allows me to use in on the D610.

I have more than one 50mm Nikkor and 135/2.8 Nikkor, with and withOUT that AI ring...in these 8 years I'd been using them all on my various Canons...and found them all easy to use stopped down just one or two F-stops...as you can see even wide open the lens brings home the goods....

From today's bike ride, shots taken with the 300/4.5 MF Nikkor-H and a new find, a VIVITAR (apparently made by Samyang) 17-28mm, on the D610

+1 !
Great pictures.
Kita, in which part of the world do you live ?

Thank you Oliver...I live in south Florida/USA....

Two "herds" of about 6 deer each roam in small groups through a nature park (Riverbend Park, Jupiter Florida) with about 12 miles/8km of bike/walking trails where many people walk/run/bike and never see them...but the deer show up more in early morning (hence the nice diagonal light) before most (noisy) people come and in that quiet time they allow me to follow them... I go there for my 2x/weekly bike/exercise ride....and photography...

Thank you Kita.

About the Nikkor K 4.5/300mm I received.
I have to clean the back glass and can't reach it with my spanner wrench.
Do you know how to dismantle the back part of the lens so that I could reach the back lens group ?

PostPosted: Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:39 pm    Post subject: Reply with quote

Try cleaning the rear element with a 6" wood cotton swab...not sure where you can find them but it might work...or try wrapping some lint free material around a chop stick?

Unfortunately it's Inside, so I have to unscrew the back glass. Confused

I bought the lens recently. I was very disappointed when I put it on my Sony A6000 mirrorless. I then read this post and decided to try it on my Nikon D7200, even though I thought I could not use the non AI lens on it (the lens was tight when I tried to put it on my camera). Finally, It fitted and I snaped a photo. When there is not enough light, the lens just didn't shine. I tried it on my D850 and took a photo with a camera flash, stopped down at f 11 and wow, it is pretty sharp. I am going to try it again tomorrow when it is daytime.

I've had the Nikkor-H 300/4.5 for almost 40 years, had it CLA'd and converted ti Ai over 30 years ago. I currently use it on the Df, have used for wild life and airshows. Never fails to please. Some of these lenses have led rough lives, mine has been well cared for. Check for any light haze, or misalignment of the elements. A brick wall test is sometimes useful.

Beautiful shots from a great lens!

I have the AI version of the 300mm f/4.5 which is also fine. Mine is not the ED or EDIF version, but still very sharp!

The Nikon lens designations can be a little hard to keep straight. The sixth edition of Moose Peterson's Nikon System Handbook helped sort it all out for me. Here is it on Amazon, you can also get it cheaper on Ebay.
