Have you used one of these ? I have a 1.3x on my EOS XTi , but doesn't make much difference . I am curious if it's good enough to help focusing the central portion of the frame without replacing the focusing screen . I know there are some pentax ones 2x wich I suppose are good optically . But these ones?

I tried one but found it does not make much difference when I have a EOS 350D. I think it won't help much on fast lens if the focus screen is designed for using AF lens.

My father bought one of these recently and he's very pleased with it.

I ordered one for myself a few weeks ago, I'll let you know my thoughts when it arrives. Smile

The listing is removed, but if it's like the one I have (Tenpa viewfinder thingy) I have a real problem with it. Optically it's fine, and I suppose it would help with critical focusing. But it prevents you from seeing the entire viewfinder in one go, making framing really hard. It came off my camera almost as fast as it came on.

It has to be that way, otherwise it would not be magnifying.
Good ones, however, are flippable, so you can flip up the magnifying glass and see normally again without having to remove the magnifier.

The one in the link above (just search the item number) is hinged so it can be flipped up and out of the way for framing.

Yes. The metering and other info may not able be seen on the VF which is annoying.

Yes , it's the flippable one .As Orio says , It has to be like that .I need it for the centre for critical focus .I use on my Eos cameras adapters with AF confirmation that are not very accurate ,so I need to fine-tune the focus when the central sensor lights on .
For composition and info, of course I'd flip it up.
Nisseliten info that it's optically good is important , thank you !

This is the exact reason I ordered one, AF chips can't be trusted. Sad

+1 I tried to help with a TIENPA 1.3x magnifier , nope, doesn't help at all. That's why my EOS cams are unemployed for a year

I have a Contax magnifier, I used it when I had my 400D but not with the original focusing screen
it is great for lens test on tripod but not practical for handled photography
if you have the Nex3, why do you still use the xti

Of course, at the time of ordering this I wasn't aware that Magic Lantern would soon be available for my 7D. Razz

Now that I have focus peaking and magic zoom this contraption is unlikely to see the light of day. Rolling Eyes

It's only annoying until you flip it out of the way. Very Happy

poilu , you're right. But I'd need the 2.3x magnifier not for the XTi , but mainly for my EOS 50e .It's my main Full Frame camera Laughing that can take manual focus but AF lenses too. And for my APS camera ,Canon EOS IX to use it with my manual lenses too.

That's right, I received it the other week but haven't had the chance to try it yet.
I've been too busy with work to do much photography lately.
Plus now that I have Magic Lantern (alpha 1 version), this piece of equipment is surplus to requirements. Rolling Eyes Sad

I received myself too and tried ... nope , I don't like it . The optical quality is not as it should be (at least for my eyes )
